Decisions/Admission Thread 2012

I received a $7,500/yr scholarship today from Cox School of Business, to go with the $12k/yr Provost’s scholarship from the university I got back in December. I was accepted as a BBA Scholar, but the Cox scholarship letter made no reference to that, so I’m hoping for a BBA Scholarship as well. Does anyone know about those? I agree with texasgirl57 - even with these scholarships, SMU is expensive (especially compared to UT, whose Business and Accounting are ranked very high by USNews)

Yeah I just got a letter in the mail saying I got another 5k/yr in addition to my founder’s (15k/yr) Even with 20k a year, it would still cost me 30k+ to attend SMU. No way in hell would I choose that over UT McCombs.

I got accepted on like December 20th, or something. In-state, received the Founders’ Scholarship ($15k/yr, I think), still waiting on more $$$.

Same. Accepted like December 23rd when I got home from vacation. I live only a few blocks from campus haha. Got the founders scholarship too.

Today, I got a letter inviting me to the New Century Scholars Program; however, I am a bit confused about “finalizing my invitation.” I went online and it wants me to fill out some things, but idk if I am going to SMU. Im still waiting on all of my other schools so im not going to commit to anything

Found out that I got deferred today.

Does anyone know if SMU has to defer EA candidates if they are not accepted?

No, some are flat-out denied from EA.

@johnangle Oh okay thank you for answering.

Has anyone been admitted yet that hasn’t received scholarship money? It seems almost everyone commenting in here has received money of some kind.

accepted. 33 act, several 5s on aps, 700+ on SAT IIs. Provost scholarship, Honors College

@ryantexas32. With those grades I would be shooting for IVY schools and not for safetyhavens. With all due respect sir!

Welcome to College Confidential and the SMU page, Ramanarayanan.

If I just got my acceptance letter along with the Founder’s Scholarship, does that mean that I am no longer in contention for a President’s Scholarship?

They haven’t yet sent out President Scholarship interview letters yet, but you should be notified in the next month I believe. Good luck!

Accepted with founders!
SAT: 2270
SAT II- 780 Bio, 740 Math 2 :frowning:
ACT: 33

Other good schools I have been accepted to: USC(Deans scholarship), U of Michigan Ann Arbor!

My daughter was accepted yesterday with a Provost’s Scholarship ($12k/yr).

In the acceptance letter they made specific reference to the subject and content of her Common App personal statement.

I’m curious. Is that standard procedure in all SMU acceptance letters?

stanford78 - Congrats to your daughter on her acceptance! My son also received Provost and his letter also made reference to one of his essays. Very nice personal touch - defnitely not a form letter!

My son applied early action at SMU and received decision letter on 12/16. We have been VERY impressed by SMU - we receive something from them every couple of weeks (meaningful stuff, not just junk mail). He has also been accepted to UT, A&M, and Tulane. Still waiting for Duke decision.

As of yesterday, SMU was his first choice and we are pleased with that, but are hoping for additional scholarship help.

^ I got a personalized note about my essay as well. Does everyone get this note?

My D was admitted ED in late December 2011, the letter was full of praises and kudos for achievements almost 2 pages long!!. Stating that the board was very impressed with her accomplishments and they name them. Her SAT was 2100 composite, 5 AP’s and in top 10% of a very competitive private school. With multiple leadership and EC activities, prizes etc, etc. But at the end they don’t mention any scholarship. My question is given her high standards and a very impressive letter of admission but no scholarship offered. I’ve seen others with less impressive curriculum getting at least Provost or founders. Any thoughts?

Ramanarayanan - That certainly sounds like an oversight. My S received his provost letter in the same envelope as his acceptance letter. He since has received a Cox scholarship as well. I guess one possibility is that she is in the running for a full ride scholarship - I would contact your admissions counselor and inquire.

My son was accepted in December. Wonderful letter but no scholarship. His test scores were lower than Ramanarayanan’s D and fewer AP’s. We were never expecting a scholarship and are just thrilled he was accepted. We were so impressed with the school when we visited this past summer. Everyone we met was terrific, impressive campus and wonderful school spirit!

@SanFran2015- I felt just like you thankful to God that my D was accepted and impressed with the college. But being a middle class working family (not according to our President :), with 2 other kids approaching college, $60,000 a year can take a toll on you. I understand that there are loans and other financial incentives, we certainly do not qualify for poverty financial aid. So at least some type of merit aid would have been nice and kind of give you a heads up.
So maybe I would become more enticed to pay the difference. But from that to ZERO- ZIPPO-NADA? And topping it with a letter stating what a wonderful achiever you are? I still don’t get it!. She has been already accepted to similar quality schools, some maybe higher ranked with diferent merit scholarships, (Boston U, Northwestern, UT honors). But what happened here?
