use another comp (at school)

I got accepted. International living in the U.S.

RE:

drop65: I'm an Asian OOS from NJ with a 1530 SAT (790 M + 740 V; 2230 total) and I got waitlisted. I guess my GPA killed me (3.631 unweighted in a tough magnet high school).

Sorry about getting waitlisted. Oddly enough, i had aroudn a similar gpa (also uw in a tough magnet hs). All i can say is I truly believe that this admissions process is a crapshoot and you just have to cross your fingers and hope you run hot.

ACCEPTED OOS!!

nj
white male
good public hs

2300 SAT
770/710/680 SATII
4.0 UW 5.87 W GPA
Rank 2/235
NMF, all league soccer, etc

pumped!!!

Accepted in-state. Homeschooled, 770V/700M/720W, 670 US History, 680 Biology, 4.0 in five courses at a community college. ECs: not much of anything, but I work full-time. No high school GPA. (Homeschooled, why bother with it?)

congrats to all accepted!

it seems that what many of us have always thought gave you a good chance of getting into some schools is no longer valid. I wonder if you drop most all except GPA, SAT scores, concentrate on just school work, if that isn't still the way to go. It was like that 25 years ago and if seems to still work better than spreading yourself so thin.

Have college admissions officers and hs gcs been misleading us all along and when encouraging us to put our kids in everything, doing it more for the sake of hs sports and clubs than for the sake of the kids? sorry if this sounds so negative but when you have kids that have busted their butts to do these things, where is the evidence that it all mattered beyond SAT scores and GPAs? go back to my original belief that if those scores are not high enough, the apps gets tossed!!!

It's a hard call beatduke. Some schools are all about stats (TX...rank rules...top 10% law); some schools use stats as the first cull but after that, you'd better have something pretty darned remarkable going on beyond those stats (Ivys); and some schools try to minimize the SAT altogether (CA)... It really just depends on the school.

In the case of applying as an oos at UNC, I was advised that essays are looked at carefully. I think my d has strong scores, but because of an odd weighting system, busy schedule and a heavy load of APs/Honors, only a fair GPA (3.7ish). She is a good writer and I think her essays are what made an impression with Carolina...and what may have kicked her into the accept pile were her ECs. She spent a year preparing a very intensive NHD project...interviews with CDC, Rice professors, U.S. Customs...over 130 sources and a killer senior group performance at district, state and nationals in DC. She did this at the same time she was practicing 15-20 hours a week with her competitive cheer team and traveling on weekends to competitions to prepare for NCA Nationals. I think if she had not had all of this going on, her GPA might not have been considered acceptable. And I don't think if she had opted to drop all ECs and just focus on that GPA, she would have made an impression at all in the minds of Carolina admissions counselors.

I get the impression your daughter was very active in EC activities as well. Obviously it paid off with an acceptance at GaTech which also has a highly selective admissions process! :-)

waitlisted OOS
SAT: 2210
GPA: 3.7 UW
Top 10% of class
all honors, APs
bunch of ecs and leadership stuff

it's cool though cuz i'm not going there anyway

There's nothing more hilarious than to see parents talking about colleges on CC as if they were admissions experts. "GaTech??" lmao. Don't you moms and dads have better things to do than come on a website that only your "D's and S's" (the way you guys like to spell your kids' names) should be wasting time on? Seriously now, as a college-bound teen, it'd be pretty annoying if my mom and dad tried to get so involved in the college process that they start posting stuff like teenagers on a young people's forum.

My parents feed me, put clothes on my back, a bed to sleep on, and I turned out just fine. They let the college process become the first thing I learn to handle by myself as a maturing young adult, and for that I'm very thankful.

And oh, I'm proud to join all you Chapel Hill class of '10 accepttes as an OOS!!!

lol...now now chlor. My d is much too busy for CC. :-) And CC is for all ages. Parents are welcome on all forums and students are welcome in the parent forums, as you have probably noticed. Congrats on your acceptance btw!

(PS...check my profile)

hee hee! 10 char

owned (10)

Accepted! Out of State- NY! awesome!

accepted instate

Chlor, you are the man. Yes I am an in state applicant that got in, and I know that it isn't nearly as hard to get in as OOS, but for kids that aren't blessed with an inate genius, and yet are still pretty bright, getting into UNC is a feat even for instate kids.

I'm sick of parents (and kids) getting on here, telling the world thier dreams of going to UNC, and then when they don't get in they lambaste the school and complain about thier lack of emphasis on this or that. Get a life, everyone can find a college they enjoy, even if it isn't your first choice.

chillmandan....that's on every board at decision time....check WashU's board for the extreme side of it. It's called disappointment....and the need to vent. Human stuff.

And you should be very proud you got into UNC, instate or out of state, doesn't matter. UNC is not in the habit of taking slackers.

i got in!
stats:
instate, female
GPA: 3.88(uw) 4.5(w); 6 APs-4's in 3 of them
SAT: 700(CR) 710(M) 680(W) SATII -710(math I), 750(math II)
ACT: 32
ECs: Community Outreach Club, SGAC, Student Govt, IFC Committee, Different Drummer, Science/math Clubs, Dance lessons, Volunteering at the UNC hospiatal and CH library etc

i wonder if i'll get any scholarships...

boy, i am glad i actually like my parents and find it ok that they get on here and get info. as for growing up, if you think posting something rude is growing up, wrong. who pays for school guys? who paid for those apps. and the sats. must say i like my mom, actually take her advice some, even though she irritates me too. but if you don't have anything better to do than trash your keepers, you have a problem.

btw, grow up. school is all about the numbers and if you don't know that then you will be very disappointed getting in med school or law school or even a decent job. if 5000 white guys all apply for the same job, it is a crap shoot who gets it! now if they happen to need a little flavor in the office, it mixes it all up, doesn't it?

I will be paying for my own college tuition. And respectively I paid for ALL of my college applications, and SATS...
