Congraulations to all those that got accepted to UCSB and are going here, you won't regret it. As a current freshman here, I feel that it's my obligations to help those that have questions (i.e. about IV, dorms, professors to avoid) before going here. The older members of this forum helped me last year, so I thought I should return the favor.

^ Great!

I'm just interested in the atmosphere.

I'm probably going to UCSB (rej. from UCD and UCI) and I've heard a some of my friends talk about racism there (I'm asian btw). Is this a problem at all?

Also I'm going to be looking into the "Asian culture special interest floor" or maybe the multicultural one, are those any good?

Your friends that told you there was "racism" here were clearly wrong. It's very liberal here, despite the fact that it's a caucasian majority. I'm asian too btw. I haven't experience any racial hostilities since I got here. Everyone's tolerant of one another. Regarding the asian interest or multicultural floor, my advice is don't self-segregate yourself by picking those floors. Just stick with a normal floor and you'll have tons of fun and will meet many people different from you.

P.S. I might sound bias, but I think the only UC campus that have might some sort of racist or better yet "anti-semantic" atmosphere to it is UCI, seeing how it's located in one of most conservative/corporate control place in California.

Hondaicivic, I'm majoring in Communications and wondered about what dorms I should request. Thanks.

If you're social, stay clear of Manzanita Village and San Raf because Manzanita is mostly for upper-class kids and pretty much dead 24/7. San Raf is mostly for transfer kids and dead as well. FT is overall the best dorm in terms of size, bathroom situation, and social atmosphere but the 1 mile bike ride to class everyday can be a ***** most of the time. The on-campus dorms are pretty much fun as well but you have to share a bathroom with like 50 kids from your floor. But the on-campus dorms is close to most of your classes so you can just walk there without using your bike. Also if you're bringing your car, you have a greater chance of guarantee parking at FT than the on-campus dorms, just to let you know.

@ hondaicivic

Do you have any suggestions for transfer students who want to meet some people? I was thinking of doing the transfer dorms.

Yea if you're a transfer, it's best to pick the transfer dorms because you don't want to be stuck with freshmen or other upper-class kids who already established their friendships with one another, like at Manzanita.

^^^If I request FT on the first day I can (May 1 i guess??) how likely would it be that i got in?
