Decisions, decisions...

Hi all,

I was admitted for transfer admission into Barnard (one of my top choices). They want a deposit within 2 weeks. The problem is, a few schools that I am also very interested in either do not give concrete dates about when they release decisions or their date for releasing decisions is after the two week time interval.

How should I approach this situation? Is it alright to just say "I got in to Barnard but I really want to go to your school; is it possible for me to have my decision a bit earlier so that I may pursue the best strategy accordingly?" I really do not know how to approach this situation; any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can ask Barnard for an extension due to later decisions by other schools.
You can ask for early decisions since you have to reply to another school.
You can put the deposit down at B to hold your spot and be ready to lose the money if you choose to go elsewhere.

It’s a no lose situation to ask B for an extension.
I really don’t think schools mind if you ask politely if you can possibly get an early decision, they understand that transfer decisions/deposits are due at different times.
Find out what Bs policy is on deposit refunds, you might get part of your money back.

Thank you so much for your detailed response, entomom. Since at the moment I do not have enough money to put down the deposit (which is noted as non-refundable), I will most certainly ask Barnard for an extension, while asking the other schools for early decisions.

Good luck!

Thank you, entomom! I called all of the schools today, and none of them said they would event try to give early decisions.

I got a one week extension from Barnard, which makes the deadline take place on the fourteenth. Most colleges say they will begin mailing letters on the fifteenth, which I am assuming means that the letters will not reach me until a few days later.
Additionally, nearly 3/4ths of the colleges say that they have not even gone to committee yet to look at the applications.

Would you recommend I talk to Barnard again and ask for another extension? I am so nervous and unsure about what to do at this point.

Absolutely talk to B again and tell them about the decision dates for the other schools and describe your financial situation and the hardship it puts you in to possibly lose your deposit. The worst they can do is say that they won’t give any more than the week long extension.

I’m really sorry that the other schools wouldn’t let you know early, this is one of the tricky parts about transferring, I really wish schools would be more uniform like they are with fr admissions.

Thank you so much for your advice. I agree, it makes no sense for decisions that are due on the same date to have such staggered deadlines!
