Didnāt get in. Stats: 34 Act and 4.08 GPA

@Tent Something about a unanimous desicion.

Well, one of you waitlisted people can have my spot, because Iāve decided I donāt like the CMC drinking scene. Iām trying to figure out how easy it would be to go and transfer to Pomona, made a thread about it here if anyone knows! Congrats to all who got in, and good luck to those waitlisted!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/pomona-college/1108947-transfering-cmc-pomona.html

Waitlisted. 34 ACT, 3.91 GPA.

Invisibleorange, donāt think transferring is by any means guaranteed. I would not go to CMC, if the only reason is to transfer. If you donāt like CMC, youāre probably better off going to another school. Really, that would be a terrible decision to be somewhere you donāt like, particularly since you could transfer from anywhere to Pomona. Why did you apply to CMC, if you have this perception of CMC in the first place. I must say that your narrow view of CMC is quite wrong, but I suppose you have your reasons.

Just found out my boyfriend got in! 2110 SAT 4.00 UW GPA, recruited athlete. Iām very excited for him, it is his first choice school. Heās already been accepted to Swarthmore but he loves CMC. Congrats to everyone who got in!! Hope you guys will go and meet my boyfriend, heās a good guy!

@parent: isnāt it easier to transfer within the Claremonts? Anyway, when I applied I hadnāt visited, and when I did I heard from quite a few people (to be fair, about half of them were from Pomona) that the quad that the dorms open to is almost always full of drunks. Also, I feel like everyone majors in econ or IR, both of which interest me, but I also like English and math. Would love other input as to the merits of the school, itās so hard to get any kind of objective view before enrolling!

I got in Stats on the Rice forum:

At the end of the day, a college can pick whomever they want. If they wanted you, youād get in. Sorry you werenāt accepted but with 4481 applications for 400 slots, CMC has plenty to choose from. This time around it wasnāt you I guess, but race can only do so much. Thatās not how college admissions work at selective schools like WashU, Rice, Dartmouth, CMC, etc.

Invisibleorange, trust me whoever you talked to at Pomona doesnāt have the slightest idea of what theyāre talking about. Sure, the schools are different, but believe me CMC is much more than a drinking school or an economics/govt school. There are many great majors at the school. The Psychology, English Lit, Philosophy, Asian Studies, Religious Studies, Languages, International Relations, History and the Joint Sciences program are all first-rate. The PPE (politics, philosophy and economics) is an interdisciplinary tutorial-style Oxford-type program, which I donāt think has been duplicated anywhere else in the USA. Yes, the kids at CMC are very social, probably more outgoing than the students at Pomona, and will party on the weekends (it is college), but they are also very smart (take their academic studies very seriously) and many of them volunteer in the community, participate in extracurricular activities like student govt, play sports, work at the research institutes and do internships all over the world. CMC is much more multi-dimensional than what some students at Pomona would have you believe.

My advice is go to the admittance day in April and and experience CMC with an open mind.
One thing you will see is that every student you will talk to will tell you how much they love the school. Believe me - it is not because of the alcohol. Also, I donāt believe going to CMC will give you a leg up in transferring to Pomona.

Invisibleorange - if thatās the only reason stopping you from enrolling, think again. I donāt want to make you feel like Iām pushing my beliefs on you, but what you said is not at all true! I personally am very against drinking (very unlike the German heritage in me), and I donāt find it to be a problem to me at all. True, the drinking scene can be a bit of a turn-off, but this is a problem at 90% of the colleges - Pomonaās rep is actually worse between CMC/Pomona. North Quad is not full of drunks - in fact, Iāve never wandered into anyone who seems the least bit intoxicated during daylight hours. There are still social mixers and events that are dry, and you can go to parties + not drink. College is what you make of it.
As someone who is very uptight about grades and classes, I canāt emphasize enough how I DONāT regret coming to CMC at all. I cannot imagine having a better learning experience - everyone knows each otherās names, even the cleaning ladies + cafeteria staff.
And itās not any easier to transfer within the Claremonts, or at least thatās what the admissions say.
If you have any lingering questions, donāt hesitate to message me!

If you want to go to a college with low alcohol consumption, pick a religious school with restrictions on drinking. Otherwise, wherever you go, including Pomona, there will be plenty of drinking on the weekends. But, all schools, including CMC, have many students who drink moderately or not at all, and youāll find them. Also, take Pomona commentary with a grain of saltā¦ CMC and Pomona are neck and neck in stature, selectivity, and qualityā¦ so you can expect some biased opinions on both sides.

i think itās a little close minded IO to choose to nixs a school because of a perceived image. There are plenty of ways not to be apart of the drinking culture. For one you can live in Stark which is a substance free dorm, or you can just not succumb to peer-pressure and not drink. If people stop going to CMC because of a perceived image than that image will become self-actualized. By going to CMC and not being a drunkard you are preventing the image from continuingā¦ you see?

I was waitlisted. Surprised since I also had a rec from a CMC professor, whoās coached me for a while.

Also: Iāve spent a fair bit of time around CMC and it doesnāt seem like drinking is a problem. I also know a lot of students who havenāt felt pressured. Donāt forget they have substance free dorms in a couple places, with Stark (which has lots of freshmen) being one of them.

I think my interview went horribly, but idk

I think the reason I got in was my leadership essay
I wrote about why Sam-I-am (the Dr.Seuss character from Green Eggs and Ham) had the potential to be a great leader. It probably stood out considering I chose a character from a childrenās book XD

Hey country day I feel for you. I am obviously much older than you and have experienced many disappointments and failures in my life. It is always difficult not to get what you want, but I have found in my life that I learned far more from my failures than the successes. In retrospect, I can now see that whatever success I have achieved in my life is directly attributable to these hard times, and I am better person for learning from my missteps and applying that knowledge to overcome the inevitable obstacles. i know this sounds very cliche, but I think most successful people will tell you the same thing. Wherever you end up, I am sure you will make it a great experience, and if it isnāt, you can always transfer to CMC or some other college. In the end, it really doesnāt matter which college you go to, if you have the intangible qualities like perseverance, integrity and a modicum of intelligence, you will go far in life. Keep your chin up, the hurt will not last very long. Good luck.
