Decisions now?

Okay I am so shocked. I just received an acceptance letter from Colgate (and I'm international). It says I've been selected as an Alumni Memorial Scholar. What is that, exactly? Is there anyone here who's an AMS?

And I'm assuming this is legit right? Even if they sent this to me wayyyy before decision letters are usually mailed out?

Thanks!!

Wow! Congrats to you!

It is legit! Congrats! Apparently you have been selected among the top 200 applicants to receive this opportunity!

Congrats! Do you know what date it was mailed on?

They send out AMS acceptances earlier than the rest of the acceptances, even for those who applied regular and not EDII. So don’t worry if you haven’t gotten a letter yet, it doesn’t mean you’re not accepted, all it means is that you’re probably not AMS, which they only offer to the top 200 or so applicants. More info here: [Colgate University : Alumni Memorial Scholars](http://www.colgate.edu/admission/apply/scholarsprograms/alumnimemorialscholars)

Did anyone else get an AMS letter yet?

I researched about AMS and I understand that it comes out a month before. I was just wondering about the date, because if Colgate sent them on Saturday people, in the U.S. couldn’t get them until Tuesday because mail isn’t delivered on Sunday or on Presidents’ Day.

Thanks  It was dated February 18. I hope you guys get your mail soon!

Not sure if I will attend though, because I applied for financial aid and there’s a cost difference of $8,000. (They didn’t give me any loans though, they said that’s part of being an AMS…) Is it possible to increase FA awards?

Strange that they didn’t give you loans. Since you’re one of the most-wanted applicants, I would start talking to the FA people. If you’re really interested in Colgate otherwise, go and talk to the FA people and see if you can get a better package.

My DD got her AMS pkg today. Thanks for the heads up they had gone out. When I saw the large envelope, I brought it to my DD at lunch. She didn’t know anything about the AMS decisions being mailed yet At first she thought it was just typical Colgate mail. She saw a calendar, then she opened the folder. It was a real surprise to her and brought a big smile to her face. She only looked quickly because she had to get to class… I think we will have to get up there for a return visit - hopefully during hockey season (her favorite sport to watch).

ticklemepink, I believe AMS replaces loans within the FA package with grant money. In Kaitlin01’s situation, it looks like Colgate calculated her EFC as $8000 more than she expected. She can always ask for loans to be added to cover some of her EFC but I think she’s objecting to the EFC being that high. It’s tough with Profile schools because its hard to judge how they will use your info. This is our third kid and we’ve seen huge variations in aid from Profile schools. I didn’t see my DDs letter yet but judging from my her reaction, I think our EFC must be about what we expected… at least I hope so.

Could AMS students check to see if their portals have changed to reflect their admittance? Thanks!

Jerzgrlmom what are dd’s stats? (if you dont mind)

I just got accepted with AMS!!! I’m so excited!!! Colgate wasn’t my top choice, but now that they’ve given me $50,000 more than a month before I’ve heard back from other schools, I’m definitely reconsidering.

woowhooo! I just got mine too, it was also dated 2/18. It took me a while to find the actual acceptance letter and realize what it was saying. I am so happy!!

@momdoc, I looked on the portal and didn’t see any changes…i guess they haven’t updated it yet

Thanks, corj93…DS just received his packet, too! We’re so excited. Haven’t been to visit campus yet…will do so as soon as possible! Congrats to the other scholars!

the campus is beautiful, you’ll love it!!

Please post stats!

Correct, as part of the AMS package, you get grants rather than loans. It can’t hurt to contact the Financial Aid office to see why it’s different than you expected and if you can appeal.

DS’s stats if it helps anyone: 34 ACT, 1480 CR+M
