I am not really sure where I should post this, but here it goes. I find myself in quite a predicament and I will explain it as clearly as possible. I was admitted to Franklin and Marshall College for the class of 2016 and got in for the spring term. This gave me the opportunity to either have the longest summer ever, after i graduated from high school. Or to do something with my time in the fall term and get some credits so I wouldn't fall behind academically. So as of right now I am in scotland at University of St. Andrews, a well known school I hope most of you know of. I applied for 1 semester and was able to get in (I am known as a study abroad of JSA as they call it here). I also applied again to try and stay, just to see what my chances were, and miraculously got in for the second semester so I will be able to spend a full year at St. Andrews. And if I end up staying here I will of course apply for all 4 years, I am sure I just need passing marks to be able to get that. So here is my situation. I am not IN-LOVE with St. Andrews. But compared to Franklin and Marshall College, it is way better academically and has the "prestige" factor. The few quirks that I do not like about it are how sports here are not taken to seriously. (I grew up in a new england boarding school life style so I am used to small communities).
If I choose to go back to F&M, I think and know I'll be alright there academically, and socially it will be fun. And right now at St. Andrews I am not having the best of fun...just mostly studying a lot. But either way, I am going to try and transfer to Colgate just to see if I can get in, because that is my dream school. It's got everything I want...a beautiful campus, great athletic D1 program (I am a rower) etc.. So what do you guys think?

I’m not sure what your question is since you concluded you are not having the best of fun at St. Andrews and that sports aren’t taken seriously there. If you apply to Colgate and get accepted, then you should go there since it’s your dream school. My suggestion is that you contact the rowing coaches at both F&M and Colgate to see if and where you would fit in on their teams. Although F&M is not a D1 school in sports, they do having a rowing program as well. Perhaps you will be a bigger fish in a smaller pond at F&M. In other words, more valuable which would result in more competitive “rowing time”.

Also, although Colgate may be harder to get in statistically, F&M is also a top rated school and graduates from F&M are very successful as well. I know because I graduated from there. My son attends Colgate. You can be successful at either school. If you did not get accepted into F&M for the fall, you may not be a good fit for Colgate but, it doesn’t hurt to try. F&M has a pretty nice campus as well.

Finally, what are you intending to major in. Academics should be the number one priority. Perhaps, F&M has a stronger program in your prospective major (i.e. business) than Colgate who doesn’t offer business as a major.

I am interested in economics and business. I know Colgate has a good econ department which I like and F&M has a business major that is challenging to get into.

I get what you are saying though. I am going to try to apply to Colgate for the fall of 2013 and see what happens. If not then as of right now my choices are to go to F&M this spring or continue to study at St Andrews in the spring and hopefully get in for the full 4 years (which is a very chancey situation)
