decisions question

Hey everyone :)

I applied yesterday (Decemeber 21) to LSA.
Do you know how long it takes for decisions to come out?

I checked a box on the Common App that asked to be considered as Rolling Admissions...

thanks!

cmon guys
if you take the time to read it, please answer :)

^given the number of people that applied well ahead of you and the pace things have gone at so far, I wouldn’t anticipate getting a decision anytime soon. I’m just guessing, but unless you’ve got killer stats it’ll probably be late February or even March. Sorry.

what are “killer” stats for Michigan?
jw

^there are multiple EA students that were deferred with 3.8+ GPA’s and 2200+ SAT’s. The admissions process this year is really out of whack compared to previous years due to several reasons, most notably the first year for Common App at U of M and too many admitted freshmen last year. There was a HUGE amount of deferrals for EA applicants this year, many with strong stats like those above. Not sure how it will affect the rolling Regular Decision releases (i.e. how long before some of the deferred EA folks hear back versus RD folks hear for the first time). It’s all a crapshoot and a guess at this point.

I tried to send you a message, Wolverine86, but the there were to many characters. So I’m sorry for writing this in public.

You seem to know what you’re talking about based on our conversation.

Would you mind giving me an idea of my chances?
I’m new to the system and I was counting on Michigan to be an “easy” in. But i’m a little worried now…

chachacha…Thanks for the vote of confidence, although it’s not really warranted. I’m the parent whose first child is applying for colleges this year so I’m new to the whole process as well, but I’ll gladly give you my opinion…as long as you take it with a grain of salt. Based on your stats, I’d say you’re definitely a strong candidate for admission to U of M. Your unweighted GPA might be a little lower than they’d like but your SAT score is solid. If you were applying to Engineering I’d say the SAT and SAT II Math scores were a little low as well, but I’m guessing you’d be looking more towards something more like Political Science or International Relations so I don’t think those will hurt you overall. Being OOS, if you had applied EA this year I suspect you’d be in the deferred pool with many others. If you read through the decisions thread (the long one has lots of posted stats but also a lot of side discussions…worthwhile reading but a little time consuming) you can see what I’m referring too. Kinda confusing in many cases, because some of the OOS acceptances last Friday had good stats, but in many cases the OOS deferrals on Monday had better stats. No one is really sure what criteria Michigan was using since it was a “holistic” admissions process. As an RD applicant, I don’t think anyone can honestly say when you’ll hear back. It could be early after the new year, but it could take until April. My gut feeling is you’ll get accepted, but it depends on how long you can wait to hear. Also, U of M is not known for providing much merit aid for OOS students, so depending on your family’s financial situation you may want to factor that in. Good Luck!!
