Decisions Thread

Neha,
Most people prefer TCNJ, as it is a nicer campus. Yet, Rutgers has better name recognition. I'm not trying to be stereotypical or sexist, but, in general, it is better for girls to go to TCNJ than Rutgers (which is in Newark).

Accepted: Wayne State BS/MD, Rochester (BA/MD), University of Michigan, GWU (10k), Case (almost full), MSU (full ride + stipend), UPitt (full tuition)

Rejected: Stanford, Northwestern, Rice, Brown.

Decision: U-M. Decided to go here to stay close to home, save a lot of money, and take a scholarship they offered. Even though it is a lot of work and I wonder (temporarily) how things would have been at other places, I don't regret the decision I made. I love Michigan, the people I've met and befriended, and the opportunities and resources I have here. No matter where you go, the best advice I can give, in retrospect, is that you make your own college experience ! There will be a lot of pressure to go to X or Y, but choose in the end the place where you will be happiest, grow the most, and have tons of opportunities. Good luck!

Without meaning to be too negative, this thread makes me inclined to dislike BS/MD programs. Many of the students here are desperate to get into programs that - and this is hard to project, four years down the line - would make quite low-level backups towards the end of their undergraduate years.

Does med school prestige matter? Not an awful lot, so this is not an awfully big deal.

Still, it does make me wonder: would you have been happier having to work for three extra years in college, taking some moderate risk (because, honestly, these seem to be some of the top students around) and getting to choose not only between medicine and many other careers but among many medical schools?

I must confess that I worry that some students are sacrificing a lot of their future - not just their chance to explore other professions, but other medical schools. How many of the students ending up at, say, Brown PLME (and I'm intentionally picking a very good medical school out of the ones listed here to avoid insulting any of the other schools) would rather have ended up at Michigan, or Hopkins, or Stanford, or Penn for medical school?

And, on the other hand, perhaps I'm predicting too far in advance. Maybe a 2360 on the SATs doesn't mean you're going to do well in college. And maybe that guarantee really is worth something.

Still, these programs make me wonder what these kids are giving up: not just careers in business, law, teaching, or whatever else, but other medical schools as well.

(And, yes, I know you can apply to other medical schools, but it changes the entire psychology of your undergraduate years, as well as often luring you to an undergraduate school that might not prepare you as well for the application process.)

BDM is right...same reasons I'm not all hardcore only these programs anymore...it's def not that I'm not committed to med....believe me...I am.....it's just...you go to college go to med school do your residency...and BAM you're in your thirties...you may have some kids....but ...relaly did it help you in anyway to speed up your youth? That and the lingering question...could I have gotten into x med school if I hadn't done a prog?

ITA Bluedevilmike, that's why if I get into any of my reach schools I'm going to choose that school over any BS/MD program I might get into

to each, his own.........

I have a question for all on this board who have applied to the Conley Scholars at Mizzou.... I have an AcT score of 30, a 4.01 GPA UW, and am about 40/396 in my graduating class, and solid EC's including hospital volunteering among some school clubs..... I was just wondering what you think my shots of getting in is just based on those marks before my interview.... I know it might be tough to tell but I didnt know if you guys know any of the marks they usually take.... Also, What types of questions did they ask you for the Conley interview.... were they more general about yourself or very medical related with current medical topics covered? Thanks alot everybody and good luck with college applications

Does anyone else know the answers to the Conley Scholars Program questions from above?

Accepted: Princeton, UPenn Vagelos, Northwestern HPME, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill

Decision: HPME

Why: I was really torn b/t Princeton and HPME-my dream school vs. my dream to be a doctor. It came down to this-HPME is one of the best programs around-and Feinberg is a medical school I would really want to get into even if I went to Princeton. At Princeton Preview, I met a lot of students who got into HYP but not HPME, and who would do anything to get into a good accelerated program. I doubt that anyone who got into really prestigious accelerated med programs couldn’t get into med school through traditional UG. All top 20 med schools are pretty much the same in terms of prestigiousness/selectivity except for Harvard and JH, so why go the traditional route when you’re already in a top 20 med school?

Even though Princeton is a great school, surprisingly I didn’t really like it when I visited, and I think the whole “Ivy league experience” is a little overrated. Who says I can’t get the same liberal arts education at Northwestern, which is also a great UG school? Plus, pre-meds have a noticeably different experience in regular UG Ivies anyway-you have to think twice before taking the classes you’re interested in, the activities you love, the major that’s most attractive to you. It’s not just about the guarantee-it’s about what opportunities the guarantee can provide. Without having to study for 300 hours over the summer for the MCAT and spending a year filling out applications/flying to interviews for 20+ med schools due to rolling admissions, I can do so much more with my time. At Northwestern, I’ll be able to take advantage of the University’s opportunities much more than I would be able to at Princeton-I can take a 3rd language w/o worrying about it pulling down my GPA, as well as do study abroad and a quarter of international service w/o worrying about how it will affect my schoolwork.

Before I made my decision, I was mainly attracted to Princeton for the name, the undergraduate focus, and the alumni network. However, only your residency really matters in terms of name (no one is going to ask you where you went to undergrad when you’re looking for a job). Also, in terms of undergraduate focus, I’ll get more attention/support from my professors who will not only be working with me for my 3 years of undergrad, but also for my 4 years of grad (which will open up more opportunities for research with professors, etc), instead of just being another number at Princeton. Finally, sure there’s great alumni that come out of Princeton/ivies, but at NW I’ll have an even more tightknit community of 30 people who will be there with me throughout med school. Almost everyone in HPME will have turned down Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, etc, so everyone’s in the same boat. With peers of that caliber, I’ll be just as intellectually challenged and stimulated by my classmates as I would be at Princeton.

In the end, having the freedom to do what you want because you truly have a passion for it, and not because it’ll look good on your med-school application is priceless. I think it’s much more valuable to do service because you truly love to help people rather than because you have to. Even though Princeton sounds good now, I’m following my heart by going to NW and I know that this will matter most in the long run.
