CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO GOT IN, GOOD LUCK TO THOSE DEFERRED

Congratulations to those accepted!

I was deferred last year and then accepted RD so those of you like me: don't let it get you down. I must have used up 2 boxes of Kleenex that night (probably less but it seems like a lot). And don't worry so much about the statistic of how many people get in after deferment: don't categorize yourself by this information, they really do look at everyone separately. Focus on how you might improve your chances with an extra community service project or some other way you can show yourself in a better light. There's a limit to how much you can do since it's already half way into senior year but don't give up. Do all you can and enjoy yourself no matter where you end up attending. Good luck!

I was deferred and then accepted last year too. I wrote some heart wrenching letter about how much I loved UVA and exactly why I wanted to be here and so on. I guess it helped. Also make sure your grades are superb, because they see those in Feb.

I was at a Duke ED talk (where my bro wants to go... but im working on him to come here and i almost have him willing to apply - he doesnt wanna follow in my footsteps or whatever) and they said they defer so many ppl because your schedule is usually harder sr yr than the other years and they wanna see how you do with the increased course load. So it's nothing personal. Just do well!!

Yes if anyone has any questions about being deferred or life here or whatever feel free to contact me. Also if you have facebook look eachother up. I know I live in Brown College with a few CCers and I took a class with another. Kind of cool... Well I think so at least.

Congrats to everyone who got in, and good luck to everyone still trying!

wow, this is so exciting to hear even though i'm applying RD. I have lots of friends at school who applied ED.

But anyway, i think it's surprising that UVA deferred so many with excellent stats. and i also thic the stats for OOS students weren't as high this year. interesting...

my friend wrote this.. i have to agree

To Whom It May Concern:

I am confident that I am neither the first, nor will I be the last, to express my utter and complete disgust at the admissions of UVA. Before today, I considered UVA a reputable and respectable University. Needless to say, everything has changed.

It has become apparent over the past few years, that it is almost impossible to predict what a student should do in order to be admitted by your admissions officers. However, a few things were clear. Would you admit a student with a 3.3? Never. A student in the 1700s for their SATs? Rare. What about a student who drops Calculus after first quarter, failing, and attempts to erase the grade from their transcript? Laughable. Yet, this year, UVA decided a student who does ALL of this would be absolutely perfect for their school, accepting her early decision. I am appalled.

What on earth could possibly make up for receiving below a B+ average in high school in order to get into one of the most "prestigious" universities in the nation? Not to mention the fact that this student attended Langley High School, where nearly 50 applicants apply early every year with tons more applying regular, all super qualified with GPAs of 3.7 and up, extracurriculars to fill their days, and impeccable SAT scores. But somehow, this student with a mere 3.3 is considered more qualified for your school. Honestly, how is that possible?

I just want to know if your admissions team has considered how badly you have demeaned everything the more qualified students have worked for. Countless hours of studying, doing work, volunteering, and striving for the best, and still, a student that would have trouble being accepted into some lesser in state schools, is somehow easily accepted over thousands of other actually deserving candidates.

What lesson are you trying to teach today's high schoolers? Don't try? Spend your high school career sucking up to teachers and weaseling extra credit only to achieve a 3.3? If I would have known this 4 years ago, I would have stopped trying all together, probably gotten higher than a 3.3, and created some sort of "program" (maybe nursing?), and I most likely would have had a better chance at being admitted into your University. That is pathetic.

I understand that this letter was probably thrown out after the first line was read, but if anyone at UVA still has enough integrity left in them to read the entire thing I hope you know that you are everything that is wrong with the college admissions process.

Maybe the person with a 3.3 is a good athlete that they want to recruit? It's VERY normal.

Excellent. He denounces the Peabody hall in one full swoop because of one admissions decision? Lol. Perhaps the applicant in question was black or a star rower. (Either was, I'd disagree with the admissions decision, but such preferential treatment is standard.)

If you're going to draw this kind of conclusion from such limited observations, perhaps a school like UVA isn't for you...

she's white and plays no sports thank you

Well then you thesis must be correct: UVA's Office of Admissions has no integrity and admits people for no discernable reason. Bah!

Perhaps she was well liked by her teachers, showed leadership potential, and wrote awesome essays. Rather than complaining about the whole admission process just because she didn't get in.
