i hope that you guys dont take a def. as a kick in the face...i know LOTS of kids last year that got def. that eventually got admitted...college admissions just straight up suck, because after seeing on here kids with 4.0s, instate, ect not get in and kids with 3.6 get in, im still trying to figure it all out...its just a combination of the right stuff, all at the right time, and good essays..
so, re write those essays if you want, send them an updated resume, get great grades for the rest of the semester and into next quarter, and hopefully the second time around you'll do fine =)

I kind of agree with dan but can you make a new thread or something O-o. This is the decisions thread.

yes... giving more information about this girl, she was also in my history honors class and had a 85 at the end of the year while i had a 93.3. While doing what normally every student usually does and asking for the grade boost and letter change, i failed to receive just .2 percent. On the other hand this girl who was not only 4.5 percent off a B+ cheats weasles her way into getting it raised 8.5 percent to receive an A. While i can confidently say i'm smarter than her, and even worked and studied countless hours more than her, she received a higher grade. This was just one of the classes that she has done this in... yet she has only a 3.3 gpa with a class schedule of a retard. Basically that means she has had numerous C's and B's on her transcript and most likely D's, which from what i understand should be rejected regardless of her ec's and sats. But if you actually look at her whole application than really it just worsens her chance. She plays no sports and is white. Her Sat's as we all know are horrendous at around 1700 and off the 1600 scale just completely atrocious. Even if she were black and received major affirmative action she would have no chance, yet she got in. She also has no legacy.

Wow... what bs.... i hope something like a rejection letter somehow ends up to her..

I can't really understand all your post, but the bottom line is still the same. You must be the only one who thinks admissions is a fair thing. People get into school for all sorts of reasons.

Man, you're going to have a real wake up when you get to school and who knows who and who has what connections comes into play in other ways. From getting out of trouble with the RA to getting into a full class to landing a job/internship.

Is talking a teacher into a higher grade cheating?

Admissions decisions can be very surprising, as we've seen.

I still don't understand how my brother was accepted into the E-school two years ago (he's attending JMU, though) during RD. He had a ~3.6 GPA, 1420 SAT, 1 AP junior year and 4 APs senior year. His SAT2's weren't that great. I didn't see his essays, but I can guarantee they weren't anything amazing, as he's never been a very good writer. And his E/C's were definitely lacking, only one or two school clubs and he wasn't very involved, youth group at church, and about 6 mos. of work experience at a job tutoring younger kids.

I'll be very frustrated if I'm not accepted come RD. My GPA is about the same (although I have a very strong upward curve: 2.8 freshman year, 3.7 sophomore year, 4.2w/4.0uw junior year), but I have 9 AP's/6 honors to boot, 1490/2140 SAT, 770 US History, 690 Math2, 650 Physics. I don't have a ton of EC's, but I'm very passionate about a couple of them. I also have more work experience. :p

Clearly my freshman GPA will kill me if nothing else. Although, I'm fairly confident in my application to highly-competitive SCS at Carnegie Mellon, as they do a GPA recalculation without 9th grade. ;)

Now that all you Langley boys have completely disparaged one of your fellow Saxons and are showing your true colors through disgruntled, spoiledbrat comments, don't you think that UVA admissions is going to take notice of that and closely examine YOUR deferred applications and auto-reject you come April? I don't care how perfect an application you have, this is not gentlemanly behavior and is not what colleges want to see in their student body.

UVA doesn't owe you or anybody else an explanation of how they make a decision on individual applications.

motherdear who said anything about being a boy or being deffered

I think the definition of "spoiledbrat" (which is two words really) is getting into a school you don't deserve because mommy and daddy helped you with money to get in. But okay, Motherdear, if it makes you feel better to get on a forum and call teenagers names that's cool too. Plus, I'm a girl. But whatever.

typical langley hater

Does it make it any better if you get in easy because you're good at football or you're black?

Heh. Its a simple answer to a simple question: she has connections both within your school and apparently UVa. Its the old adage: Its not what you know its who you know. Unfortunately, no modern institution is invulnerable to this including UVa. The rest of you need to stop being naive and admit that UVa is fallible.

cavalier302, absolutely not.

i agree uvaisstrange, all schools are like that. You just gotta live with how the world is made even though its pretty rediculous that a girl with those qualifications got in and not the governor's daughter (read from previous post). Also motherdear you shouldn't be calling anyone out, its often extremely frustrating when someone gets rejected or deffered, or are just angry

Oh yeah and I have a question myself that may get this thread back on track. How often does UVa make clerical errors? Has it ever happened that a person receives a "deferred" decision online and gets a different one by mail? Essentially, I am asking if I should wait for the letter before I despair and wallow in my misery. Also, what happens if for instance I discover that I filled out my in-state application incorrectly and therefore was not considered as in-state. Is it possible to be reconsidered under such circumstances for ED?

I was a bit harsh so I apologize. However, the whining and attitudes of entitlement makes the Langley posts sound as if they're written by spoiled children who didn't get their way. Don't you think the adcom officers know how to choose their future Cavaliers? Obviously there is something that this girl has to offer that UVa desires. We aren't privy to her entire application. Do you know what was actually written on your recs vs. hers?

What these Langley students have done is put a black cloud on Langley. This occurred by the first person who mentioned the hs name. Your hs is not all that large and anyone who really cares can probably figure out the identity of this "unworthy" girl. The same can be said for the Langley student who mentions that he/she attended a specific VA Gov School one summer.

I think it's shameful that you would have no compunction about mentioning this girl's GPA and even term averages in particular classes on a public forum. She is not here to defend herself.

i would probably call them and ask on monday (while they are receiving their 1000 calls asking why someone was rejected/deferred)...they will probably say, "we double check every decision and application very thoroughly don't worry"...i'm sure it has happened on some rare occasions in the past though

I know of a case where it happened, but if you have marginal numbers, don't assume it happened to you. The person it happened to last year had excellent numbers and was instate. I haven't seen anyone on here who would have as much solid footing as he did for an appeal.

i go to uva myself, but i myself was in the same situation that many of these students are in. Being rejected / deffered is one of the most frustrating things to go through, and it is common the blame others that they deem are not qualified, especifially if they received the ed decisions on dec 1st which was just yesterday. There definately gonna still be angry.

Chill out motherdear and let kids be kids, and why is a mother on this forum, thats a bit wierd isn't it?

Thank you, motherdear.

I also find these posts disgusting. For one, I'm not at all certain that these stories are completely factual, possibly a little exaggeration? (By the way, how do you know her complete and actual stats?). I've always been taught to be modest in victory and gracious in defeat. I know you all are probably upset, but that doesn't mean you have to lose your morals.

If she did in fact give money and got in...welcome to the real world. Look around: The nation is run by millionaires, companies such as Halliburton send our troops to Iraq, Bill Clinton was able to avoid the draft, George Bush may not have dodged but he was given a fluff assignment. Open your eyes...

And just a word of warning, colleges look at myspaces, they can just as easily track you down on this forum. They already know that you go to Langley HS, all they have to do is look at a chances thread and I think they can narrow it down quite easily. So personally, if I were you, I'd start covering your tracks.
