But all I had was my GPA. I really had nothing else. Nolan had all those activies even though his GPA was not so high.

You had a solid SAT for an instater and your EC's were sufficient. Your GPA was high and clearly very, very competitive in your school environment. Nolan's SAT was high but his GPA was not very competitive for his school environment. Please understand the relationship between GPA and class rank and the importance that each has.

Can someone tell me what "first generation" means under that one link? Like does this mean first generation of a foreign family or what. Help plz.

first generation is that you're the first member of your immediate family to graduate college
some schools say that 1st gen is the first to ATTEND college, some say first to GRADUATE college, and some say ATTEND/GRAD as the very first in your fam (as in no older brothers/sisters)

UVA views first generation as your parents didnt recieve a college degree, and i think UVA views its importance as just under legacy status...obvioulsy your GPA/rank/essays/SATs more, but being a first-gen definently helps!
Very important admission factors:

* Alumni Relation
* Class Rank
* Racial/Ethnic Status
* Recommendations
* Rigor of secondary school record
* State Residency
* Academic GPA
* First generation college student

Important admission factors:

* Character/Personal Qualities
* Application Essay
* Extracurricular Activities
* Standardized Test Scores
* Talent/Ability

Considered:

* Geographical Residence
* Volunteer Work
* Work Experience

I don't know that I would compare legacy status to being a first generation college applicant. Legacy status give no boost to instaters and a big boost to OOS applicants. The boost given by first-gen status isn't so clear.

well, that comes from collegeboard, and i remeber reading on another website that first gen was in the very imp. category

still waiting....

My boyfriend applied, out of state, from one of the top private schools in the northeast. He has a 3.9 unweighted GPA, a 2050 on his SATS, President of Spanish National Honors Society, President of Bussiness club, teaches religious education, tutors, works 15 hours a week, got a letter from a notible alumni, also is a member of National Honor Society and has performed many community service projects. His essays were not the best things hes ever written but they were still good. Also, he is Hispanic with dual citizanship. He got deffered! so stupid

adcoms don't care what stuffy private school he went to.
2050 for oos IS below average
honor societies are generally meaningless.

i bet he was ranked outside the 5%. anything lower than that OOS is a total crapshoot.

His school doesnt rank, but he is WELL within the top 20 students in his 200 student class. I'm not saying they should have let him in, (even though i wish they had just said yes or no) i just find it strange how all over the place the stats are.

His stats are good, (better than mine) and he's also URM. It is weird how he didn't get in.

His numbers are competitive but not overwhelming for an OOS applicant. UVA doesn't give much of a boost to hispanic applicants. It might be disappointing that he was deferred, but it's not shocking.

only so much of admissions can be accounted for by sat+gpa...

if his essays wernt that good, then that may have been the factor...the essays seperate the numbers, as out of two kids with the same scores/GPA/general ECs one might have written a "not the best thing ever, but good" and the other might have written "great" essays, and its a chance for the board to see the individual person outside of numbers and lists

i know everyone's known for about 3 days now, but i just found out today
I Got In!
byaaaah!

congrats!!!

Both ED candidates from my D's school were accepted. I have no idea what their stats are like. One is an in-state non-minority male and one is an OOS (possibly with legacy) URM female. Both are nice kids who will add a lot to the class, and both are over the top with joy.

Congratulations to all who already have good news and sincere best wishes to those who are still awaiting glad tidings.

We had a lot of ED people who got in at our school (Fairfax County). The average for their stats was a 3.9 GPA and 2050 SAT

Im in Fairfax County too and a bunch of people got in ED.

Everyone who got in was kinda cocky about it though. It ****ed me off. I'm a junior btw.
