Decisions

Last year, they accepted 137 of the 190 people invited to CW, which is why the class of 2010 is so big. I think there were 7 people who deferred last year, and I suspect that Olin has a target class size of 80 total, so 73 slots for Candidates who applied this year.
Good luck everybody!

On the second day, after the Design Build challenge, there is a certain amount of time slated for individual interviews. During that time block everyone gets interviewed; you and your group members take turns being interviewed by the same student/staff/faculty interview team. After that chunk of time, everyone reports back to the room in which they were interviewed for another chunk of time, about an hour. You then have an evaluated group discussion.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Spiraloflife,
What is the Design Build Challenge? What kind of question will they ask?

The questions are close to that of a general interview, but I think informing you of what they actually consist of is less than a great idea. Olin is looking at you; preparing for the interview could create the opposite effect. Rehearsed responses are silly- be yourself and if you fit, they will let yourself in.

The Design Build Challenge is a non-evaluated activity in which you and your assigned team have a block of time to design and build something from supplied materials that fulfills a goal. For example, last year's involved us building boats that had to hold at least 5 pounds and meet a height requirement. We were given a lot of material that wasn't especially waterproof. It's super fun, and after you're done building, you test out your creations and then you get awards based on superlative-like categories (eg. Most Stylish, Biggest Mess, etc.)

Thanks again Spiraloflife,

How is your first year at Olin so far?

So I just thought I'd clarify some numbers for y'all...

181 Candidates invited i*
110-120 To be admitted
10-20 Waitlist

72 Accept our offer of admission i*
+12 Deferred from 2006

84 Students for the Class of 2011

Yes, we had a freakishly large number of students accept our Deferred Year Option last year and so it has affected how many students we can admit this year. Although we plan to continue offering the DYO, we don't expect to have nearly as many deferred students as this year!

Hope this makes sense and I am very excited to meet some of you in a few weeks. :)

Have a good week,

My first year has been going well. It's a lot of work, but I really like it here. College is such a great point in life to be at.

Spiraloflife-

How do you like the extracurricular activities at Olin. Does Olin participate in any national or international activities?

Spiraloflife, I can understand there will be a lot of academic work. Whom do you go to, other than Professors, if you have difficulties with subject material, assignments, etc? Do senior class students help the juniors? Am I right in assuming that there is a lot of interaction among students from different years because the student population is not huge as in other colleges? (When we visited, our tour guide seemed to know everyone she came across as we walked around with her.)
Another question, can you change majors after enrolling (say at the and of first year) or are you stuck with what you said in the application?
Thanks.

There are tutors called NINJAs (Need Information Now Just Ask). In the past, every freshman has been assigned a NINJA who helps them in groups and one on one. Everyone at Olin is generally very friendly and willing to help you with your work. Classes also usually have upperclassman for graders (sometimes these are NINJAs, sometimes they are not) but you can usually go to the graders for help too. At Olin, especially freshman year there is also a large amount of peer teaching where you help each other on problem sets and projects.

Especially after first semester freshman year, there is a lot of interaction between classes because classes are often a bit mixed, espeically freshman mixing with sophomores and juniors mixing with seniors. Additionally, at meal time there is a large amount of mixing between the classes. Plus, every freshman is assigned to a SIBB by student life. A SIBB is an upperclassman who is available to answer any questions you have. You get assigned your SIBB over the summer so you have someone you can ask about what to bring to Olin and stuff like that.

Another great way to mix is by joining a club or co-curricular.

Do you have to declare your major when you enroll? In the past you did not have to declare it until you are a sophomore. I think almost all the classes you take your first year are required for all majors. I changed my major during my junior year (granted I thought I might do so so I took a wide range of classes in both majors when I could) but it was no problem. I know others who switched their majors too. Don't worry about knowing you major when you walk into Olin. There are plenty of more urgent things to stress over than that right at the beginning. Plus at Olin you will get a professor as an advisor and they can help you plan your courses wisely if you are unsure or split between two majors.

Hope this helps!

I am a freshman, and I have been told that changing your major is essentially as easy as filling out the form.

JoyJoy, you are fantastic! Thanks for the detailed response. You put my mind at ease. I can't wait to come over for the CW!

Thanks beantowngal. I love helping here. Especially now that I have graduated from Olin, I miss it. And this is a good way to get a little of an Olin fix too ;-)

Invited from the Stand-by List.

This certainly made my day. Wow, I learned so much from the last two weeks since they put me on stand-by.

Congrats, None! :)

According to CW, they mail decisions on Friday...... Only three days away!
Anyone remember when they said they would post decisions online?

I don't think they said anything about posting decisions online, but I assume that it would be the same relative time as they posted the candidate info in February.

Mathwiz: At CW2, they said decisions would be posted on line on March 21.

Hi folks... :D

Just thought I'd remind everyone that, yes, admission decisions will be available online on Wednesday, March 21st at 12 pm EST.

And yes, all decisions should be in the mail by Friday... I'll send an email (as well as post here and on my blog) when "Elvis has left the building..."*****

*****where "Elvis" = admission decisions
and
"the building" = the Office of Admission
