If I live in a central time zone, will I find out at 11:00 p.m. since they are posted at 12:00 a.m. eastern time?

Looks like it is (now) 5PM EDT on Thursday, March 15

really?? when did this occur?

Not sure. The posting time listed on the Furman website "Application Checker" was previously listed as midnight but this was changed ~2 days ago to 5PM.

uuugh thats soo annoying! i don't think i can handle waiting until 5!

I wish you all well and hope you get good news at 5PM

Ok it's 5pm now. I have a friend who is applying here, hope she gets in. And good luck to everyone else!!!

D is in. She's pretty happy. I won't know whether I should be happy till I see the financial aid info...

i got in too! it wasn't the most straightforward acceptance letter that i have ever read i actually had to read the first couple lines twice. im so excited to visit!

D accepted--viola performance. Anyone hear about any music merit money?
Congrats to all!

My son was admitted. Now awaiting the "parent's admission letter" (i.e. financial aid). Congrats to all.

RedHerring - no, we haven't heard about music merit or anything else. I am truly expecting d to get some music merit, based on reactions at her audition, and response from other schools, but don't know if it will be enough.

Does anybody know if there are other merit awards available for kids who don't get Lay finalist and don't live in SC? I just don't know what to expect. I heard second hand that GA students get some sort of HOPE equivalent - true?

binx - Our oldest son was admitted two years ago and did not apply for the Lay (read - we had no idea how the college aid process worked). He still received 10K in merit aid simply based upon his application(SAT 1440, ACT 31, GPA 3.8). It is frustrating that the cost of attending Furman has gone up a similar amount in those two years (read - I wish my income went up that same percentage every year!!!!!!)

Wouldn't it be fun if colleges changed their merit aid to reflect a 4 year cost of attendance, rather than "discount"? Instead of saying, $10,000 merit award, say "Congratulations, you have been awarded a reduced tuition of only $14,000 per year, for four years." A lot easier to compare decisions!

Or at least, merit aid that was x percentage of cost?

If I were in charge of the world.....

Although my daughter ended up not applying to Furman last year, we did visit and attended a local presentation. They stated (and followed up with a postcard) that GA residents would receive $3,000 as an offset for the HOPE scholarship.

They have stopped this $3000 Hope offset effective with 2007 entrants. We received an e-mail stating this from them last fall. They stated the reason as copied from their e-mail
NEW FINANCIAL AID POLICY
Like most colleges, Furman is faced with providing aid to more students with limited funds. To allow us to focus money on those students who are financially needy, we must discontinue some of our grants that are not based on financial need. This includes the Tradition Grant, which has been awarded to Georgia students as recognition that they turn down their Hope scholarship to come to Furman. When we began that program, the Hope scholarship was unique. Now, all southern states have similar programs and we cannot afford to supplement all of those students without consideration of their ability to pay. Students who need financial assistance will have full access to an array of programs, including grants, received by the majority of Furman students.

Thanks for the info. I am sorry to hear it! Unfortunately, we have an unusual financial situation that FAFSA does not recognize. I thought the HOPE offset plus some music merit money might make Furman realistic for d. We don't have any financial info yet, so we can still hope there will be enough merit to offset it. Fortunately D does have some other viable choices.

Got the snail mail acceptance today. D got $10k violin scholarship. Furman is currently in the #1 spot on her list. Need to wait to see what other schools come up with financially, or if Furman comes up with anything else.

anyone else have their fin aid/merit package yet?

No word yet on financial aid/merit scholarship (non-Lay)
