its because you have such a high profile that they believe you will choose another university Brandeis! read the previous posts! its strategic, and princeton is a wizard in doing this. thats one of the reasons how princeton got #1 in usnews.

PrimeMinister, I am shocked that Brandeis turned you down... Admissions is unpredictable!
Where have you got in so far?

primeminister: Although your stats are indeed impressive, I'm curious if you showed any genuine interest particularly in Brandeis.

Did you have an interview?
Did you articulate what it was about Brandeis that appealed to you?

If it looked like you where just applying to Brandeis to give yourself another school to choose from, it's unlikely you would have been accepted regardless of your stats. A school like Brandeis wants to see genuine interest, which is why applicants with lower stats but higher interest-levels have been accepted whilst you were rejected.

I'm sure you will be accepted by other fine schools. Good luck to you.

I don't think I need to defend myself, or Brandeis for that matter, and totally understand that college admissions is unpredictable. To answer some of your questions (hoping this helps future applicants):
I think showing interest would have been something I could have worked harder on. By the time I tried requesting for an interview, that option was closed. So, I emailed them an extra essay like they said I could. An interview would have helped, I think.
After being rejected by Brandeis, I cannot help but worry about my other colleges. I have only heard from (and been accepted by) BU so far so basically, I am waiting anxiously for my other schools!

primeminister, i am quite certain that you will be accepted by universities that are higher ranked. your profile is above average for brandeis and i believe that if you contact the admissions office in brandeis they will probably say that you were sort of overqualified? anyway if you think you will definitely go to brandeis then call the admissions office and say that brandeis is definitely my no.1 choice. they should reconsider you for a place sooner or later

hmm, it should be interesting in seeing the acceptance data of ED versus RD. I'm glad I did ED.

Also, primeminister, I think that you mentioned you're low-income is a big part of it. Brandeis doesn't promise to meet 100% of your need if you're an American applicant, and they certainly don't for international applicants. It's not a need-blind institution for international applicants.

I couldn't imagine getting rejected for something completely out of my control.

Primeminister, I'm surprised you were rejected. The logical thing for them to do would have been to waitlist you as a means of a litmus test to determine whether or not you hold a sincere interest in the university...not that waitlisting overqualified applicants is right either (it happened to me at Muhlenberg), but at least then, you have an opportunity to defend your interest. I'm pretty sure that I was waitlisted at Brandeis though, because while my stats are way above for Muhlenberg, they were on the borderline for the Deis.

figured out how to fix it

If you really do want to attend Brandeis, don't simply stay on the WL and hope for the best. Call the admissions office and tell them that you will enroll if accepted (assuming this is true, do not lie to them!)

P.S.: If a false accusation of cheating from a teacher resulted in a bad grade, I think you should have filed a formal complaint against the teacher in question. (it's probably too late to do you any good, but you should really do this to help future students).

P.P.S.: I'm sure you don't need me telling you this, but "forgetting" to schedule an interview with a college that you supposedly really want to attend does not speak well for your work ethic and sense of priority. Both of these will need to be adjusted if you want to do well at whatever college you choose to attend.

And most important: Good luck to you!

waitlisted? join the facebook cult

Uh... I don't know a whole lot about Brandeis admissions, but from what everyone said, I have a feeling they don't emphasize the SAT as much as they do other things.

at a regional information session i went to last year, my rep said exam scores is certainly not a priority in admissions, and the powerpoint (i am sure many of you are aware of the ubiquitous powerpoint!) had it listed near the bottom. i certainly wouldn't say it's at Sarah Lawrence levels or something, but it's very holistic. I'd be more concerned with numbers as far as GPA and class rank goes rather than scores.

i don't recall at what school i heard this, by i recall an admissions rep addressing the "how much do standardized tests count?" question by saying--

"probably less than you worry about them counting, but probably more than we like to admit they count." i really think that is probably the most honest answer and probably applies to more schools than would actually come out and say it.

sat ranges don't get to be what they are at selective schools by mere coincidence. the fact that other factors are heavily weighted just means its harder to predict whether a given sat/gpa combo gets you an acceptance, not that sats are unimportant.

having said that -- all you can ever do is present the best package of who you are that you can -- your sat scores are whatever they are -- its one piece of the package -- if its a weaker part of it, emphasize the stronger parts. if its a strong part, don't let it lull you into a false sense of security, still emphasize what else makes you a strong package. ;)
