@jackson17: I guess you'll have to wait for the mail because you're a US applicant? My friend (who was rejected) also got the email on March 30th. We're international, by the way. So don't worry too much :) . Maybe your acceptance is just arriving ;) .

@flyboy: Hey I remember you! You were the one that helped me correct the common essay. Hehe thanks a lot. And... rather late congratulations on getting in Colorado :D!!!!!!!

we're north of San Francisco. It's his first choice, too, so he's feeling a bit sad, assuming he hasn't been accepted.
He was accepted at Whitman, Gettysburg & Washington College....
We're just waiting to see about Reed, now, and then make decisions.

Got my letter today; waitlisted. Not sure yet if I'll accept, since I got into Barnard and would be just as happy going there w/o having to deal with a plane flight everytime I wanted to go home. My stats, for any future applicants: :)

SAT: 800 reading, 650 math, 790 writing = 2240.
GPA: 3.644 W
ECs: lots of music stuff (leadership in marching and concert bands), VP of Model United Nations. Lots of volunteer hours.

Why I think I got waitlisted: I had a really bad interview (advice: be careful if you have a phone interview! you interviewer can be really hard to read.), also the low GPA/high SAT might have painted me as a slacker (though I believe my guidance counselor wrote a rec explaining that my stats were misleading since I moved across the country in the middle of high school and my W GPA has been a 4.2 since then. Maybe they didn't buy it ;)).

tigersboymom--Whitman is a great school. I visited both Reed and WHitman. Personally, I liked Whitman better..it provided a more diverse social scene, facilities were amazing and the classes I attended were awesome. If you ask me, Reed is missing something w/o any athletic teams other than ultimate frisbee, which I love. The school spirit teams can provide adds to the school experience and provides for more outlets for club and intramural opportunities for even passing athletes. In the end, Imopted for a different school mostly because I am from the midwest and getting back and forth from Whitman takes all day and I thought I might feel Walla Walla is a little small after a year or so. Good luck to your sone, he still has some very good choices.

flyboy, sounds like you know exactly what you want, you've chosen it, and you'll thrive at CC. Reed suits students who disdain "school spirit" that revolves around athletic competition. It suits students who actually enjoy thinking/reading/studying and don't feel the need for a break every few weeks. Typically, Reedies aren't bored by a lack of big-city entertainment, though Portland does have plenty to offer; it's just that Reedies are usually too busy to get off-campus much. Two of my kids are Reedies and they treasure what Reed does offer.

cello guy..I would guess you are generalizing when you say Reedies disdain "school spirit" that revolves aorund athletic competitions. I actually think you have to read/study/ and think at CC as well and I would venture to say they there is a bigger city environment in Portland than exists in Colorado Springs. Further, there's no need for block breaks which drive most students to CC, it is the ability to totally immerse yourself in one class at a time that is the bigger draw. Without having to run to another class, exciting class disssions/learning can run over the three hours scheduled daily and many do.

There was no need defend Reed by being condescending about CC. That's why there are over 3000 choices of higher learning! Different strokes for different folks. Glad to hear your kids are happy at Reed.

Tigersbomom--obviously I opted for COlorado College. I didn't receive any aid from Whitman as I had to withdraw my application when I was accepted ED to CC. Fortunately for me, I did not have to make my decision based on need (in that inbetween area where I don't qualify for aid, but also will need to take some loans)..so my parents gave me final decision making after we looked at all the options (shoools) together.

I didn't get an e-mail, a phone call, or a letter. I got an invitation to the accepted students open house, which said congrats on the cover! I'm assuming I got in, but that would be a terrible mistake if not! I'm pretty confident, and I am on the other side of the country (NH) so it's perfectly feasible that this just came before the acceptance letter. But the possibility of a mailing mishap is still a little funny (slash terrifying). Oh well, I'm celebrating tonight anyway!

the figuring-out-your-life time in my life was always stressful for me because, well, "smart kids are supposed to know what they want to do with themselves". I had no idea, didn't want to talk about it and I hated every school I went to, they all just seemed the same. But I inexplicably and irrevecobly fell in love with Reed. And that's my excuse. What's yours?

p.s. I was also accepted at Colorado College, Flyboy, and it's my second choice if this acceptace turns into a hoax

just an anecdotal form of the biggest drama in my life currently. hope you enjoy!

flyboy -- you mistake my message. I congratulated you on making the right choice for you. I was neither defending Reed (why would I need to?) nor putting down CC. I said it sounded like the right choice for you, based on your own comments about what you liked. You yourself mentioned the intersession breaks as a draw for CC. And you yourself mentioned Reed's downplaying of athletic competition & related "school spirit" as an aspect of Reed that you found disappointing. This isn't about which school is better, it's about which school best fits you. How did you miss that?

So we are both on the ame page, good, cause that was my point as well. Both great schools for diffeent reasons..and lots of other good ones as well.

I got waitlisted too. I think one of the main problems is that I'm upper-middle-class requesting a lot of fin aid (EFC = 23000) and Reed's endowment isn't too great, because Reed's been trying to recruit me since sophomore year. I mailed the postcard today but I'm not counting on them to come through, at least not financially.

DD1 was waitlisted so rather than stay in suspense she is accepting a scholarship at another school. Reed was her #1 choice but this is better for my pocket since she would get little FA at Reed.

It is similar to Colorado College, and I wanted to choose at least one place that was similar to home. I only picked schools that I thought I would be happy with no matter what happened with my reach decisions. I didn't want to be like a lot of people on the boards that applied to colleges they didn't want to be at, and then only have those to choose from in the end. Reed also accepts, sometimes, younger applicants, which is extremely important in my situation. This is a mistake made by a lot of younger applicants( not choosing schools that look favorably on younger applicants). LACs seem to be a better fit in this arena, sometimes, for people like me. I will say this, I took a huge risk, only applying to top 100 schools, and with the odds being against me, I managed to pick well.

Trin,

Thanks for the referral, but I have been accepted to 4 great colleges(Colorado College, Carnegie Mellon, Williams, and UPenn). Not too shabby for a 15 year old.
