My S got his acceptance yesterday with an invitation to Mosaic. I'm sure it did not come by FedEx. He will not go to Mosaic. He's already missed too much school. Maybe he (we) will visit during his spring break.

I'm kind of confused by this whole "early notification" deal, and don't know what MOSAIC weekend is...

I'm a white male, so obiviously not minority. Does this mean that I will probably have to wait until April 1st for my decision, or are they (seemingly) arbitrarily mailing decisions to any RD canidates? And, what is MOSAIC?

Clarification: my S did not receive the "official" notification. The official notification will come, I suspect, April 1st. The purpose of the letter was to invite him to Mosaic.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that Mosaic is a recruiting weekend primarily targeted at urm candidates. But from reading this board, it appears that they are inviting applicants from a variety of backgrounds as well. Since strong urm candidates are, unfortunately, very scarce, many top schools feel the need to to pursue the few urm applicants they receive. If they don't compete, I suspect the enrollment of urm students would be substantially lower than the already dismal levels they are currently at.

It also appears that applicants competing for major scholarships have received the early notification as well.

I suspect people who have received the early notifications are a biased sample of the application pool. This board is disproportionately populated by super overachievers. The reality is that probably only a small percentage of the RD applicants who will get accepted have received early notification. So not receiving early notification is probably not an indication of one's likelihood of being accepted.

I appreciate the information. I don't really expect merit scholarships from Vandy, but I do believe I'll be admitted. If not, oh well. If you don't mind telling, when is Mosaic weekend? Oh, and, what state do you live in? Perhaps mine is still in the mail :-)

No letters have been sent to RD people who have not applied and gotten scholarships and or are minority or being recruited for other reasons.

But don't you think it is still possible for RD people to still receive scholarship offers from Vandy. . .just maybe not full rides?

Mosaic is the weekend after next. I haven't paid attention to the exact dates because my S will not attend. He will miss 2 days of school next week while visiting Atlanta. We will visit Vandy in April during his Spring break.

We live in Florida where my S will make $$ if he chooses UF!

Chopper- it is definitely still possible for RD candidates (and all others for that matter) to receive partial scholarships from Vandy. I called them about that a few days ago and the man told me they still have many more to give out. No need to worry just yet.

That's right Copper I was just talking about full ride RDs. The rest should hear sometime after the 23rd.

That makes me feel better and still hold out hope for a scholarship. BTW, what is the significance of the 23rd? I thought Vandy sent decisions out on April 1.

Have a friend that goes there and said he had heard that that was when they would prob send, also he got his decision just before the end of March last year

This may be particular to Blair, since they might wait on final scholarship decisions until all the auditions are done, but I got my RD acceptance letter on Thursday of last week (the 3rd.) It made no specific scholarship offer, but said that the final financial aid package would arrive from the undergraduate admissions office sometime by April 1. I don't know what that means.

They must be talking about their need based financial aid, not the scholarships.

Fiddlefrog - bruno may be correct about your final aid package being only need-based, but maybe not. As I've suggesed before, call the admissions office and ASK. The rep for my son's region was incredibly helpful and forthcoming. Don't stress about it, pick up the phone Monday morning. The worst they can say is that all Blair merit scholarships have been awarded and notification sent.

Please then post Vandy's answer. There have to be a lot of lurkers out there with the same question.

Even if you didn't get a merit award, the financial awards are almost as good. great school, great atmosphere.

The letter leaves scholarship open ended. It states that scholarships have not yet been awarded.

IIRC, yes the letter seems to leave open the possibility of a scholarship. However, the reality is there are limited merit scholarships available to Blair musicians--some general university scholarships are apportioned to the size of the various schools and Blair is very small in comparison. I think--and this is only my thinking not necessarily the reality--that of the few scholarships available that most are awarded to musicians for which the school is lacking due to graduation or other reason. Violinists like vocalists or piano players aren't in short supply.
I think you will find a financial aid package rather than a merit award is heading your way. Don't forget the Ivies do a similar thing for athletes since they don't give athletic scholarships. A rose is a rose by any other name. Hopefully it will be sufficient to allow you to attend as it is an incredible enviroment within an increasingly incredible university. Not a single evening will be boring for you there is so much to do.

How does Vandy notify applicants of their decisions? Mail or email?

through mail
