When do you think the people who applied near the deadline will recieve a decision?

depends on when they received you transcript, recs, scores, etc.. Most likely if it shows they were received on the wolv.access by the 11/5 or so, you could get a decision possibly by the 23rd.

so if it says they got my application on 11/1, you think i will probably get a decision on the 23rd?

23rd of November?

If I've been reading correctly, a couple of people have said they've already been accepted?

Hopefully we can all hear good news from them before dec 21. I would be so much less stressed out for finals.

I got my decision on Nov. 9th, but all my stuff was in by 10/10. I think the fact that people are receiving decisions so quickly is a little deceiving, bc there were not nearly as many applications coming in before the deadline as the days leading up to it. TONS of people applied on the 30-31, so it will take them longer than it did at the beginning of Oct. Just a little heads up, so you don't worry if you don't get a decision for another few weeks.

everything was recieved on oct 23rd for me
is it possible to hear next friday or before?
chances -
long list of ecs, lots of usmmer volunteer projects/lost of volunteer hours
great recs
UM GPA - 3.1 (low i know)
ACT 32
varsity athlete
really good essays
8 APs
most rigorous course schedule available

I think your GPA will significantly reduce your chances of admission. ACT is good, but ECs are average, and everyone thinks their essays are great. GPA is the biggest factor supposedly, so I think that will hurt you. Who knows though, I'm sure there have been kids before that have gotten in with that. My guess is deferral.

I agree with vc08

hmm
well idk but if everything else is good is the GPA going to hurt me that much?
thanks for the feedback!

hate to say this, but yes. Now I'm not saying you don't have a good shot at admission, bc no one really knows for sure what will happen. But Michigan is such a competitive school to get into, denying a kid with a 32 on their ACT will raise theire selectivity, and a very low GPA gives them a good reason to do it. If your GPA was a 3.7+, I'd say match or slight reach. But they get SO many strong applicants, and probably 90% of them have at least a 3.5. Good luck though, you'll end up somewhere good.

is it really fair to compare GPA's of people from different schools (particularly unweighted ones)? I'm sure those who go to competitive high schools are at a significant disadvantage.

Yup, they are at a disadvantage...At our high school, OOS, very few get into Michigan, even though top 7-10%....(but they do get into Ivy's and top 10 schools!!!).....UW Gpa's 3.6, 3.7 etc.......

Actually, many colleges love competitive schools, including Michigan. The most competitive school in San Diego, Torrey Pines, sent 25 students to Michigan last year. That doesn't even include the countless other ones who were accepted but chose not to attend. A 3.1 GPA is around a C avg. Michigan wants students who will succeed in high level college courses, and they will have to decide if a C avg. cuts it or not.

wow VC what scale are you using? a 3.1 is slightly above a solid B in most grading systems...

sorry, meant to put B, didn't catch that one. You're right, it is close to a B avg. I'm just saying that with the level of competitiveness in applicants, GPA can really hurt you, or help you. Of course there are lots of other factors, like background, test scores, and high school competitiveness. Michigan's avg. is like a 3.8 though, which when compared with a 3.1 is much higher.

trutru

i have a B+ average... :'(

If I have:
In state, Ann Arbor
3.5 UM toughest courses
31 ACT
Good ECs (including UMich hospital research/lab position and volunteer)
Legacy and Parent Faculty
do you think people who haven't heard yet but applied early, like me (complete 10/2) still have a chance of getting in without getting deferred? Yeah it's sorta a chances but I didn't want to make a new thread. Thanks.

Only the gods in the admissions office can truly answer that. People can speculate all they want, but they're not reading the nuances of the application that draw a picture of the whole person. These threads often focus so much on numbers that many of us think that the person behind them becomes virtually irrelevant. Keep in mind that we're not the professionals on the staff.

hpandu: i have no idea, your numbers seem alright in-state, but if you don't hear by this fri. i would guess (not sure though) that you might be so borderline they want to wait until dec. 21 to make a decision, or defer you. i would think with your legacy thing you would be fine, but you just never know sometimes. gl though.

I forgot to mention that I am a national merit semifinalist also...does that carry any weight? Thanks for your responses though.
