Congratualations to those admitted, condolences to those rejected. As to deferred until final review, that means a decision on you will be made after all applications are in -- they want to compare you to entire pool of applicants who apply. Deferral does not mean death as majority who are deferred will likely be admitted. Also, the colleges and departments within colleges vary as to percentage they want to admit early, for example: business likes to hold off on a lot of decisions until all apps are in; a program into which freshman are being admitted for first time such as communications will also hold off until the end to make majority of decisions on admisssion because it has no prior track record yet to estimate how many will actually apply and what the quality of the pool will look like.

As to Admit -- College Reviewed, it means you were admitted after full review by committee of the colege (department) to which you applied. A number get admitted without that: colleges and programs within colleges can have automatic admit levels (set at fairly high standards -- an index based mainly on test score/rank which vary among colleges and departments) where the computer can do an admit or review is not full committee but just one admission officer. Also, full committee review can result if circumstances exist that make automatic or single review evaluation impossible -- example, your high school does not rank). Note, it is also something you cannot compare to others, because many who get just "Admit" without any reference to College Reviewed may also have gone to committee review but the decision was not specified by the reviewers as having been college reviewed.

Drusba

Thanks for the informative post. Are you a UIUC admissions officer? You sure sound like one.

My daughter is one of the people who was deferred yesterday - she had applied to the school of comm. We had the same thought -- "that the school of comm decided to punt on early admissions because they have no record to go by".

My question is two fold - and hope you can shed some light on this

Will she be considered for the school of comm in the regular decision period?

If not, will she be considered for a the school of liberal arts (which was her 2nd choice)?

Thanks for your time and appreciate your response.

Regards

I guess I'll see some of you in my classes in Champaign.

Drusba, thanks for your post. Unfortunately, I was unable to file my application before the priority filing period because many reasons for attending U of I did not exist at that time. (There is a strong possibility my family may move from Florida to Illinois, among other things.) Since then, I have developed a strong interest in Champaign and already submitted my application for the next round of decisions. Thanks for your explanation of the application review process. Because my high school does not rank, knowing that my application is given the same consideration as other applications puts me at ease.

seems like many business applicants got denied or deferred....

drusba,
do you have any stats. on the percent of those who applied to the comm. school were deferred?
Or what the average ACT/Rank ranges were for those that were admitted?

applied for engineering

ACT 29
GPA 3.7(uw), 5.2(w)

I live in Illinois
Really depressed
I'm korean and wasn't born here
Wish I had done better on my ACT's...
It would be horrible if I had to go as far to Georgia Tech...
People with higher stats than me got deferred, so I can't complain...

your stats mean less in the college of engineering and business, as those are highly respected nationally, so naturally, the admissions officers of both schools will consider more than just stats when accepting-- e.g. essays count highly when compared to business and LAS. so i would concentrate more on improving other parts of the application rather than focusing on improving the ACT score, especially if you've taken it 4-5 times (like me)

I am so glad the wait is over. UIUC is one of my top picks :)

now I wait for UPenn, Stanford, Georgetown and Berkeley...

But I will definitely keep UIUC as strong option, considering I live about 2 miles from campus

QUESTION: I understand that state schools like UIUC like to have automatic admit standards implanted for students....however, are they void for the engin/bus schools? Seeing as students with 35's got denied or deferred, yet students like me with a 31 got accepted priority. I am guessing the automatic admit system doesn't apply to either school....

I think they still do it. I was auto-admitted to engineering last year, or at least, when I checked my decision online it just said "Admit" not "Admit-College Reviewed" like many others who applied my year. Not sure if they've changed it.

I think it's the same. I was a simple "Admit" not an "Admit-College Reviewed"

Satyaraj

OOS admit here too - NJ

Admitted to Engineering as CS Major

ACT composite: 30
GPA Weighted-4.257 (I don't know my unweighted GPA, though I would guess it to be around 3.85-3.90)
Class Rank: Top 2.5% (11/435)
Rather uncompetitive public highschool

Clubs and Activities:
National Honors Society
Tennis (4 Years, freshman to senior)
Mathletes (3 Years, sophomore to senior)
Student Council (2 Years, freshman to sophomore)
Communications Club (1 year, junior)
International Club (1 year, junior)
Chess club(1 year, senior (Captain))

Essay topics:
1. Self-taught computer programming since 7th grade.
2. My adoration for all things tactical and logical. (Chess, programming, RTS videogames ;P)

I'm very surprised that some of you guys got deferred/denied with those stellar credentials that are obviously much better than mine. Must have been my essays that saved me.

drusba's extremely secretive.
yes there are a lot of business apps. who were deferred or rejected because the business school is actually getting just a little smaller which means a lower acceptance rate. believe me, it was a lot worse 2 years ago when i applied. however don't fret, if you checked the LAS or General Studies box(i didnt see the app), you might still be admitted into U of I. where you can then try to transfer. but be forewarned, if you try that route, you only get ONE shot and that is during your freshmen year. after that the best they will let you have is the business minor or an economics degree which isn't too bad. it'll also give you a good amount of time to figure out if you really want to do business, do you really really really want to do business?????? a good time to figure out what you really want to do for the rest of your life.

for all of you who were accepted congratulations and see 'ya next year. for all of you who were denied, my condolences but hopefully you had a backup plan.
