Declared Major on Application -- How Hard to Switch?

I am in the middle of working on the Berkeley app and it asks to apply to a "major." How binding/significant is this? Is it difficult to switch your major?

Thanks.

It depends...
If you want to switch majors within the same college (like L&S), than I think it is fairly easy. It becomes more difficult when the major you're switching to is in another college.

Would it be hard to switch from Poli Sci to Haas? Am I better off just applying for "undeclared, pre-business" if I am even considering this possibility?

you can't just switch from poli sci to haas. you have to file a separate application towards the end of the first semester of your sophomore year after finishing all haas pre-reqs. they will look at your college grades and essays. if you get in, then you're in haas. if not, gotta go look for another major. anyone is eligible to apply for haas as long as they have the requirements done. so whatever major you select doesn't make a difference in your haas eligibility.

If the major you apply under is in the College of Letters and Science (L&S,) it essentially doesn't matter. You're basically undeclared coming into Cal even if you marked a major in L&S when you applied. So switching pretty much isn't an issue if the major you applied under and the major you switch to are in L&S, as is my understanding.

As far as other colleges go, it's a different story. From what I've heard, switching majors in the College of Engineering is pretty difficult. And switching between colleges (e.g. from L&S to Engineering) has varying difficulties depending on which colleges you're switching from/to.

And like riyam said, the major you choose when you apply to Cal has no bearing on whether you can go into Haas or not. Haas is a school that you apply to when you're a sophomore.
