Does declaring a major on an application affect your chances of getting into a college? I heard that declaring certain majors, such as a biology major, makes getting in more competitive; but I'm not sure if that's true. Is it better to go undecided, even if you KNOW what you wanna do?

it all depends on the university you apply to; some U’s don’t take intended major into account, some do for some of their colleges and not others (eg. the UC system), some always take it into account.

For example, several possibilities exist at UC Berkeley:

College of Letters and Science: all students are admitted as Undeclared. Students declare majors around their second or third year; a small number of majors are capped and require applying to declare.

College of Engineering and College of Natural Resources: students may be admitted as Undeclared or declared in a specific major. Selectivity varies between majors. Changing major requires applying to change.

College of Chemistry: students are admitted declared in a specific major.

Haas School of Business Administration: no freshman admission; students apply in their second year.
