declaring a minor and unit cap

How does the unit cap figure in for students who want to do double majors or additional minors?

You have to petition to extend it if necessary. If the various majors and minors require a lot of units, you’ll need to plan carefully to avoid bumping against it.

No effect. They don’t really care why you need the extra units. It’s more about finishing on time (4 yrs) if you want a good chance of the petition going through.

doing this extra minor will require me to take a fifth year though. Is this generally allowed?

If you pick up the paper anytime this week, you’d have seen that the state is facing a HUGE budget shortage and deep cuts. Including the UC system. You can expect to see minimum progress more strictly enforced, and spread the the UC schools that don’t have the newer policy yet. And my guess (just from what makes sense to me) is that the school will be very reluctant to grant a 5th year to anyone, especially for a minor. It’s a slot that some other student could have used that they’ll have to turn away.
