declaring from Letters and Sciences

I applied to Smith, but was accepted to Letters and Sciences. I was wondering If I could declare to be an economics major, rather than waiting on Smith?

or does anyone have any other recommendations?

The answer is, yes.

Make sure econ is what you really want, though. It’s quite different than the classes you would take at Smith. Also, MD does not have an accredited BS program in economics, only a BA (That does NOT mean you can’t take econ classes with a lot of math…you certainly can…but you can also graduate by taking softer econ classes).

Econ is unfairly credited with being the major “smith rejects” choose, but again, that’s definitely unfair. I actually think economics can be a MORE challenging major than some of the most difficult in Smith, but again, depends on what classes you take and if you push yourself.

Employers, knowing that econ is a BA, will probably actually look at your transcript in this case to make sure you still have the quantitative skills they’re lookin for, and to be honest you’re not going to get the same amount of personal attention you’ll get in a limited enrollment program like Smith. The advising, beaurocracy, etc. are going to be worse to deal with. Also, know that you can’t declare a double major with econ unless you have above a 3.3.

I think it’s a good idea to go into the econ school. If you get good grades, it doesn’t take a lot of effort to apply to Smith and see what happens. And if you enjoy econ and don’t get in, it’s not too much of a loss.

i also applied for smith but my major is listed as letters & sciences. i want to change to a marketing, management,or finance major. also i was also accepted to the honors program. will my honors classes be directd towards my business major or do i have to pick one of the honors curriculums?
