Declaring major; switching schools

Hi! I'm a rising senior and I'm interested in applying to Cornell. I am thinking of applying to the School of Human Ecology but I'm not sure which major (either Human Development or HBHS). When do I have to declare a major? Also, say that I get in the school of Human Ecology but I want to switch to the A&S. Would I be able to do so? Thanks so much!

If you want to go to A&S in the first place, then apply directly. Same for any other school situation.

It is possible. You’ll have to spend a semester in the “Internal Transfer Division” (ITD) when the applied school review your application.

Here’s my experience: I decided to switch from Engineering to A&S during my first semester freshman year. I pitched the idea to my adviser, then I went over to ITD to submit my application and such. 2nd semester freshman year I was in ITD. In order for the transfer to be successful there are some requirements, one of which being that you need to keep at least a B in all the classes you take during the ITD semester. This happened quite a long time ago, so I don’t remember all the details, but if I remember correctly, the original college is not required to take you back at the end of the process if the new school doesn’t accept you.

Someone else may correct me on this, but I believe with Human Ecology, you apply to a particular major. You should double check this though since I’m really not sure, but that’s how I read this: http://www.human.cornell.edu/admissions/upload/Freshman-App-Tips-Web-version-10-11.pdf

As for internal transfer, from what I’ve heard, the process is fairly painless if you maintain good grades. Unfortunately often people are transferring BECAUSE they are struggling and the process can be harder. I had an Engineering friend for whom this was true and I think he stopped taking Engineering classes altogether, scored well in classes for his intended college, and then was able to transfer. Cornell likes to say internal transfer is easy, but I would say that’s only true if you are proactive in the process.

Thank you. As of now I want to apply to the School of Human Ecology but I’m just worried that maybe I will be interested in something else. When do you declare your major? I heard it’s the 2nd semester of sophomore year. Does that apply for all Cornell schools or only A&S? Thank you!

I’m pretty sure only CAS and Engineering don’t admit you to a specific major. Someone please correct me if this is wrong.

You also can’t transfer to a new school if you can’t finish the requirements for the new school within 4 years. Even if you’re not getting a scholarship and are willing to stay for more than 4 years.

It seems like Cornell is for people who are sure of what they want to do when they come in.
