In undergraduate applications, some schools ask what you intend to major in. I'm currently going for engineering, but not sure which engineering. When they ask for a specific engineering major (mechanical, chemical, civil, etc)

(1) is choosing something better than "undecided"? (for admissions purposes)
(2) if I choose a specific engineering major and got accepted, will I be able to easily change it once I begin attending the university?

Thanks.

For some schools changing from Undecided to an Engineering major is difficult and sometimes impossible. It depends upon the school. If General Engineering is a choice, then you could choose it. Some engineering majors are more competitive than others and some are impacted which means if you cannot get a direct admit, you may not have a chance of pursuing that degree. You need to do a little research on each school or post your list so many of the knowledgable CC’s poster could help you.

This bears repeating.

Yes. I’m talking about General engineering vs. a specific engineering major.
Which is better for admissions purposes? does it matter?

Again: It depends on the school.

Most schools do not admit you directly into a major. In that case, the intended major field is more for a survey purpose. You will be just accepted into first year engineering and not bind to any major. Some schools do not even bind you to engineering (e.g. UWisc). Nevertheless, for the schools that admit you into specific majors (e.g. UIUC), that would be a different story. So you really need to find that out from the school’s website.
