Declining Acceptance...

I am a transfer student for this coming Fall and I have four wonderful schools to choose from. I have decided to attend Stanford University and am now faced with the task of declining admission to Dartmouth, Cornell and Penn. I was thinking of writing a letter to the schools saying how difficult a decision it was and thanking them for the opportunity to attend their institutions.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of letter? What should I include?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Eddie,

This is not only a great idea, but I've always viewed it as a necessity. In addition to the things you've mentioned (that you'd put in your post), I added specific reasons why, either (1) I didn't choose to go to the school; (2) it was a difficult decision to not attend the school. I ended up writing seven different letters, varying length from half a page (single-spaced) to nearly two pages. Some were nicer than others, and there were reasons for that. In the end, I received two short notices from the Admissions Director at Carleton College and Middlebury thanking me for my "courtesy" (their term). I wouldn't expect your schools, much bigger than my liberal arts schools, to respond, but it's definitely a nice gesture. I really hope you go through with it and good luck! I'll see ya around for the Big Game... (see below)
