decorating dorms??

any tips or advice on what to buy for your dorm?

It depends on what school you’ll be going to. Some have bigger dorms than others. Also, what comes with your dorm and will you have a roommate? Its rather early to start looking for stuff to buy.

Im going to lawrenceville…all the basic stuff like bed, desk, mirror, closet, drawer, and chair. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be in a single but there is a slight chance that I may get a roomate. I know its pretty early but I will be gone for most of the summer.

I’m going to Exeter in the fall so I was thinking about this for myself.
Maybe a lamp, hangers, drawer liners, curtains for your windows, bed linens, and fans, lots of fans. Let me think some more but look at this thread…
The Ultimate Supply List for Boarding School
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/311892-ultimate-supply-list-boarding-school.html</a></p>

Musiclover, how do you know you’re probably going to be in a single? My d is going to Lawrenceville next year, and we haven’t seen anything yet with dorm preference questions. Have you? I’m sure once school is out for this year, dorm decor will bubble up to the top of our list! I’ll have her check out the supply list.

@expatmother: while i’m not going to l’ville i distinctly remember on the tour them saying all but about 2 freshman girls rooms were singles. Hope that helps!

Bring stuff that reminds you of home! I’m from florida so I brought a bunch of beach related decorations that make me feel warmer in the coldest months. I like it when things match, so I sorta cordinate all the stuff in my room to make it feel more like home. Decorating a dorm is a blast, my roommate and I have literally rearranged our furnature every way imaginable. I curently have my bed raised so high I have a little hide out under it enough to fit my bookshelf, two friends, and I. Pictures are also great to bring, they look good on walls and shelves. I have my entire dresser covered in old pictures!

Haha, these are just my random tips!

Make sure you check your school’s fire code restrictions regarding room decor. Things like curtains are not allowed at many schools.

smelltheroses is correct - all the rooms in the freshmen dorms at lville are singles except for two.

Although I am sure the thread is really long now, I actually referred to the “ultimate supply list” thread when I was packing for school a few years ago and it covered everything!

some things i have found to work are: posters, a small box taped to wall to put phone and book in before bed, home photos, and inspirational quotes

BUMP

I know there is a super long “Ultimate Supply List,” but it would be helpful for any current students to give advice about decorations, and making your dorm room homey without violating any fire codes. The school I’m going to has a really strict fire code- half of my things won’t qualify!

wow no offense but dont worry too much about decorating your room if that why you want to go to prep school dont even bother on showing up for orientation
