First off, hello everyone..I'm new here!

Just wondering, what types of things are you all doing to decorate your dorm? What's your colour scheme? Do you have any ideas for storage solutions, wall art, curtains, lighting, bedding, etc.? I'm not really looking for ideas, but I'm curious to know what you're all doing!

Also: do you think it's possible to "over-do" dorm decorating? I have fun coming up with decorating ideas, but I'm kind of wondering if people might think I'm being vain or something for putting so much effort in to my room!

Thanks for your replies :)

I'm going into my second year, and using the same stuff I had last year. I think the overdone rooms are the ones where everything coordinates, or there is just a lot of "stuff"--things you would never use and aren't practical. I like the simple posters on the wall, and cute storage containers for stuff on your desk. Curtains were provided for me, and I had a desk lamp. My roommate and I ended up having the same color bedspread, which was rather funny at the time, but I don't think it matters if things don't match. Functional is probably the most important thing to keep in mind.

Thanks for your reply!

Oh no...I'm a matchy person.... :S

haha me too, most of the stuff i'm getting for my dorm is green and blue, my favorite colors.. I always love decorating my room it just makes it a lot more comfortable and fun to live in, I just bought a string of mini chinese lantern lights, some posters, cool pillows and stuff like that.. I don't think it should be considered vain though, its just nice having a comfortable room you enjoy being in. how are you decorating your room?

thanks for your reply :) glad I'm not the only one!

For my dorm I'm going with mainly black and bright turquoise. I bought a set of turquoise jersey sheets and a cheap black comforter for my bed. I also found some sheer turquoise fabric (remnant) at Walmart for like $2 that I'm planning on using for curtains, and ribbon for tiebacks. I'm also planning on getting a stick of bamboo (my favourite) and putting it in a glass filled with these turquoise glass stones from the dollar store. I have some (functional) black acessories (clock, storage things, hamper, frames, etc.) that I plan on using. Finally, I plan on adding another punch of colour with some lime-ish green accessories. I found this: http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=77245&PRODID=73097 which I thought was neat. I was also thinking about putting up a tropical-ish poster, and getting a cheap throw rug for the floor.

Phew, there. Those are my plans :) Yours sound neat btw!

yeah, one of my friends went shopping for everything w/ her roommate so they both have the same sheets, comforter, etc...I think thats a little over the top, I just bought all my sheets and stuff in blue and green, which is the same color as my room at home so some stuff i already have matches too. hopefully my roommate's stuff doesnt clash too badly, but it doesnt matter to me too much. i've also bought about 5 posters (probably too many!) so i hope my roommate will like them.

that sounds really pretty, flygirl!

i'm just so much happier when i'm living amongst things i enjoy... if putting thought into my room makes me vain, so be it; at least i'll be happy :).

Thank you for the replies! I feel better about it now.

I'll be having a room mate too but I'm not really worrying if our stuff matches...it would be impossible anyway to plan it because I won't even know who I'm rooming with until I get there! (ick!) I'm more worried about my room mate being a slob than anything. :O

Ah! I love decorating stuff! I've never really had the oportunity to just start fresh either (always had hand-me-down furniture and could never paint the walls or do curtains), but now that we HAVE to get new stuff, I'm doing it right lol, I'm doing Pink and green (my two fav. colors) I found this great bed spread at Bed Bath and Beyond that's got velvet and stuff on it that I love, and light green sheets, with a cream colored blanket (for when it gets REALLY cold lol), and there are great plastic storage drawers at the containerstore in pink and green, I might get a few depending on how much space (and $) I have. We've got a window shade provided, and i havn't talked ot my roommate much about curtains yet (HUGE window, it's like 7' x 7'), but I'd like to do just white sheers to brighten up the room. On top of that I have a stainless steel light, and will have to talk to my roommate but maybe a pink cheap rug for the floor.

Another girl I know is doing Orange and pink with black accents that I'm sure will look cool.

I also can't wait to order some cool posters, but all of the ones I like are too expensive :(

FlyGirl -- hopefully that neat/sloppy question on the roommate choice survey thingy will help you not get a slob for a roommie... but yeah, I'm not worrying about matching stuff w/my roommate's. If the whole room matches, great, but if not, it gives the distinct sides more personality, huh?

And plus, my side of the room probably isn't gonna match perfectly anyway. I have a realllllly nice green bedspread, creamy/yellowy sheets/pillows, a light blue blanket and a polkadotted pillow that somehow brings it all together. Plus it's all RIDICULOUSLY soft. I love it. And then... I've got some stuff for my desk (clock, lamp) that, while not the exact same colors as the bed, is really cute and looks fine anyway (it's kinda the same "tone" of color or something -- that's probably a really specific art word, but hopefully you know what I mean).
And now for the unmatched stuff -- posters! I'm just putting up whatever I like (hoping there's space for my communist propaganda poster + Dylan + Pulp Fiction at least... and hopefully Godfather?), and it's gonna be way more black&white and moody than the rest of my room. Ohhhhh well. It makes me happy, so I just hope it doesn't look too bad!

Yeah, the neat/sloppy question is what gives me hope ;)

Entropicgirl and Enquine: your ideas sound neat!

my dorm room in high school was always kind of boring. i spiced up my walls with scarves and stuff, but the fire inspectors always took them down. I really like dim, ambient lighting, like red lightbulbs and colored christmas lighting, and colorful posters (lots of rock band type stuff). But i can't afford any of that stuff so my walls will be bare until i can.

Does anyone know where I can get some good, cheap christmas/string lights? Cool designs like palm trees or tropical fish would be nifty, I think...

if you don't live on the moral high ground, wal-mart has some good ones, really cheap.

Keep the replies coming!

like someone else said on here, my favorite colors are also pink and green. i got a really awesome, reversable comforter - a light mint green on one side, and bright pink on the other. i got two pairs of sheets to start out with - one pair is blue and mint green, the other is shades of pink, that way i can choose between the two colors to fit my mood (haha). for the items that will be on or nearby my desk (laptop, desk lamp, alarm clock, gamecube, television), i went with mostly silver, or maybe it just came out that way. i got a black throw rug to go under my desk chair.

my roommate and i know each other a little already, so we've been able to talk abour our room. i bought a 5-headed floor lamp, and she got a comfy chair - both to share. we have a pretty large dorm room.

i have nothing for the walls quite yet, and quite frankly, im pretty lost as to what to use to decorate those bland walls. i've never been a fan of posters, but im thinking i should go out and get some. i need to start thinking about decorations. im used to flowers, but i dont think im going to be able to keep up with having fresh flowers in college.

<3,

Izzie Bear

Uh oh-

Am I the only one not really planning to do all that much real decorating? I got bedding that's pretty and comfortable, a lamp, and I suppose I'll probably put some things on the walls- posters of art I like and photos, but I didn't give much thought to coordinating things, and I have no clearly defined color scheme. I just kind of got things I liked as I saw them and left it at that.

No, you're probably with the majority!

haha..im just a fanatic about matching items and obnoxious color schemes.

I bought a new tv at bestbuy yesterday, and i was going to buy a tv stand for it. When i told the salesman it was for my new dorm room he gave me a funny look and seemed to think it was weird to have a tv stand in a dorm room. Is that over doing it, or normal???
