I can’t even :-&
Seven days left @CoffeeCreek @Wildermind @LukeRatkins We can do this! ???
days left! Why not have a fun fact countdown? ? Here’s a fact then - six is the first congruent number… It’s probably not that fun but it’s something to distract us, at least for a while.
And… Here comes the next fun fact: A ? roar can be heard from miles away!
If you find it difficult to get up in the mornings, be glad you didn’t own one of the first alarm clocks. The first alarm clocks have been said to only go off at am each day!
I’m so glad I found this forum you guys. The stress has been killing me, but now at least I’ve found some people in the same boat as me. Also, if the news happens to be bad, I’ll have people to commiserate with (I hope we all get in of course, but it’s unfortunately improbable).
Also @dracollavenore you got a laugh out of me with your counting down fun fact thing. Keep it up, it’s making these last few days before notification more bearable.
Best of luck to everyone! So glad I found this community.
Don’t jinx it @celtqueen ??. Only good vibes here… But we’re glad we’ve found you too ~ as for the stress… only a few days left until we get notifications from the desert. Speaking of deserts- here’s today’s fact:
Approximately % of glacial ice in the Antarctic is ? urine.
Whoops. Good vibes, got it.
Also are we sure it’s going to be Friday? I’ve been scouring their website and they seem to have taken down any indication of what specific day in December they’ll release notifications by.
@dracollavenore what time zone are we using?
Hi all. If I’m not mistaken, I believe I saw midday on the 20th on a forum a few years ago. Pacific time I would imagine, that’s what DS is in.
A literal representation how I will be checking my inbox these next few days: :-SS
@celtqueen the website says “Applicants are then notified in December if they will be invited to visit and interview at the college during the winter.” @Wildermind I agree with @LukeRatkins about the time zone being PST and he might be correct about the 20th PST as their has been a general trend for letters to be sent out at the end of term.
Term 3 / Fall Semester Part II: Oct 30 – Dec 20, 2018.
But… then again ApCom said “Notifications about admission to the second round will go out around December 21st”. So it really depends what ‘around’ means. If we’re lucky we might get them today. On the flipside, I generally like to apply Murphy’s Law https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L1pRE0Ykbbg to situations like these so I’m going to say 21st/22nd and anything earlier is a pleasant surprise. I’d like to stick with December 21st though because otherwise my countdown is messed up… ?
Following on with that: A swarm of 20,000 bees once followed a car for days because their ? ? was stuck inside.
I honestly think they will come in later. They probably got more applications. I do not know why this thread is not as active as last years.
Any thoughts anyone?
:-/
It appears that there were times on past threads that decisions didnt come out until January. Ugh! However, if ApCom said that results will come out on Dec. 21st, then it shall be unless it’s not. Good luck!
oof this whole thing is stressing me out I honestly made this account just so I could feel connected to others through stress
Hello again everyone,
Thanks @dracollavenore for keeping the conversation alive.
I apologize for going ghost. This is a busy time for all and I found it difficult to have Deep Springs on my mind.
From what I’ve read, invitations to partake in the second round are given out on, or before, December 22nd. It will be a phone call if you’re selected and an email (or maybe nothing?) If you’re not. The college definitely operates on PST, so if you live anywhere in the Americas it shouldn’t come at too strange an hour.
With regards to @Wildermind 's question, I would say that the conversation isn’t going anywhere because no one is asking each other any questions or making any statements with which we could converse and debate.
I have an interesting, though perhaps controversial, question: how does everyone feel about the college asking for your race and gender?* I can’t help but feel that any consideration of these two demographics will lead to discrimination - even the well intentioned sort. For example: this year they admitted 10 women and 5 men. This was done to increase “gender parity” (because the senior year is all male) - I can’t find the source for that fact, though I know that I read it on DS’s facebook. In the future they seek to have the incoming class split fifty-fifty.
My argument as to why this is discriminatory is as follows: if those were predetermined quotas, does that mean that a male candidate who is less qualified than his 5 male counterparts, but more qualified than some of his female counterparts, would have been turned away nonetheless? Meaning that he was rejected because of his gender. This could apply in either direction and in years with equal quotas like our own.
I would have preferred that race and gender were blind to the application committee this year and that numbers could have been assigned as identification; that way we would have been free to bring up that information in our essays and supplementary documents if we wanted to do so, but this does not appear to be the case.
Before people hit me with the “Deep Springs only admitted men for 100 years!” I want to say that I’m on your side! I don’t want gender to be considered at all, and I can’t help but feel that it was considered strongly in the year prior to us. I feel strongly against being evaluated as part of my political group, as opposed to my individual self.**
What do you all think? Is the seeking of parities and equality of outcome a good idea? How does it make you feel? I’m honestly interested in your thoughts and am very open to discussion and to changing my mind.
- I recognize that our identities, race and gender included, must, at some point, be known to the college. However, in this first round no proof of identification was actually requested, other than transcripts.
**Not that the college didn’t allow us to reveal that individual self in other ways.
@nightvale42 It’s better to connect with things like stress as it helps to share what you’re feeling. But why not share something else too? Let’s all share a bond of hope! We can do this!
@Wildermind it’s true that there’s been on average a larger increase in applicants to Deep Springs but I don’t think that will make ApCom postpone their decision. @itsjustmyfuture is right about it being postponed in the past but generally if that happens, they send a notice at least a week before the reply date so I’m still holding my countdown for sometime tomorrow.
Continuing with our mini tradition: A sheep, duck and rooster were the st animals in a hot air balloon.
@Wildermind I don’t think a phone call necessarily means an acceptance in the same way that an email doesn’t necessarily mean a rejection. I mean, it couldn’t do, could it? What would happen to those who missed the phone call? Surely you wouldn’t get rejected just because you weren’t at the right place at the right time - I’ll contact ApCom to make sure.
As for your question about race and gender… As you may now, the Telluride Trust funds Deep Springs and to summarise the situation, they said if women weren’t admitted by the Summer of 2019 then the funding would stop. Now take Murphy’s Law again and add it to the hypothetical situation of a gender blind admission process. Whilst the probability is low, what if none of the incoming class were women? The funding would stop and Deep Springs would be over. So right now, I believe they need to have some gender quotas at least for a few years. Once more women start applying I’m sure they’ll start a gener blind approach.
As for race… Deep Springs don’t have a perfect student model but they do have a class model. Not to be racist or anything, but just like the gender issue, I believe there might be some pressure from the Telluride Trust about becoming more international. It’s just a hunch but it may be true - or it could happen in the future.
Despite this, I agree that admission processes should be blind to any stereotypes and quotas but in the world we live in today (a terrible model which I’m hoping our generation can make better for a lot of reasons) there are regulations set in place that are near blackmail. In other words, some institutions play the system because minted money doesn’t grow on trees and personally, although Deep Springs is my dream school, if I had to pay full tuition, it would really be a struggle. Hence as long as we live in a corrupt society, we need to adhere to financial policies if we don’t want everything to be lost. This is especially true here in China but I’m not to sure about the U.S.
I doubt this applies to Deep Springs but here is a game that I’m sure you’ll find amusing. https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/11/1/16526202/college-scholarship-tycoon-game
Great question @CoffeeCreek
What do you mean by ‘less qualified’ ? Deep Springs stated they do not only look at academics, no SATs or ACTS, no minimum requirements are listed on their site. Even when it was not coed the admission process was questionable because college admissions are subjective. There are thousands of young men who felt robbed, even when they only admitted white men. Now adding gender and race just makes it tougher to get admitted.
The reason why, I think, Deep Springs was pressured into being co-ed is the unique experience it offers, the doors it opens plus the financial aid. Let us keep in mind that Deep Springs does not give degrees, it gives opportunities to get degrees at top universities as well as financial aid. It all about the opportunities. If they gave degrees they would not have half the applicants they have now.
Being gender blind never works because there will be one gender that will dominate and I think it will create an awkward social situation on campus. For example if there are less women then a parent would feel uncomfortable sending her child there - I know my mom would. If there were more women men would complain and I doubt no one would actually care because WOKE culture, and like you said the 100 years of being male only would be used as amo.
In the perfect world they would double the number of admissions. Honestly based on the criteria I think it is all fair game. If it were a college which stated minimum requirements and needed SATs and all that then that is a different issue.
