Hey guys, I just wanted to start a thread to focus specifically on Deep Springs admissions. What do you guys think? What is the school looking for in candidates? How are your essays coming along?

I read about this college on WSJ. Such an interesting school, and they are opening it up to women for 2013-14 school year. Apparently graduates transfer to HYPS.

Just found out about deep springs last friday! Scrambling to get my app together. Farm or Die is the motto!

So what’re your essays on, all you who are applying?

1st - a pretty square essay that was largely based off my CommonApp one but a bit more in depth. Switzerland, environmentalism, humanitarian efforts for the most part.
2nd - environmentalism, specifically minimalism
3rd - comparison between favorite author Thoreau (we’ve talked about him Pinko. { and Nunn. They both denounce materialism because it distracts humans from what really constitutes meaning in their lives and they expect immense ability and perseverance from themselves and others. These are completely in line with my beliefs and encompass all the little reasons for why I’m applying: self-governance, tight-knit community, work for example. not to mention the difficulty of the academics.

What are you guys writing about? I’m sending my application tomorrow! Whoo! :D

The purpose of education, Mulholland drive and Gerhard Richter, Sawyer Farm. Thoughts on how many applicants there might be this year?

Has anyone else gone over 2500 words?
I’m scrambling to cut down as much as I possibly can; I’m well over the word limit, right now.

Sounds cool Kenny. {:
Pinko - yes! I ended up having a total of around 3000 words, but I don’t think they were too long-winded. What did you decide to write upon? I think that it’s okay if the essays are a bit longer, as long as they aren’t super boring.

Okay. I managed to whittle mine down to 3200 words.
I certainly don’t think my essays are boring.

I’d rather avoid talking about essay topics, here, but I’d be glad to talk about this in private. I don’t really want AppComm to be able to connect my application to my online imago (though they probably will be able to, anyway).

I think that, in the past, the essays were supposed to add up to around 3000 words, so I doubt it will do much in the way of discrediting anyone’s application.
If you mentioned communism anywhere in your essays, I think they could pick you out. You have a pretty distinct writing style too, so if they are reading these messages I think they’d be able to put two and two together. But, it’s worth a try if you feel that way. {:
And… my application was put in the mail yesterday. fingers crossed

Btw - Kenny, how are you managing to put together 3 essays for a total of at least 2500 words in a matter of days?

Well i lost power for four days so I’m going to take advantage of the offered extension. Espresso should help too.

Anybody got confirmation from DS yet?

they said on the thread that they’ll let us know by wednesday

??? What thread?

the one for female students applying- sorry I didn’t clarify. I’ve gotten receipt of my application by the way, if that helps anyone. Good luck all!

My essays were only about 1800 words. After edits upon edits I felt like I said what I wished to and didn’t want to dilute the meaning with excess.

Anybody know when we hear back about round 2?

Has anyone not received an email from Deep Springs confirming receipt of the application?

According to the application, we hear back mid-December.

And now come the nerves!
