We clearly need a lasting thread for Deerfield.
share ideas, infos, questions, etc. about this greatest school @-@
hopefully I can answer questions regarding school life when I attend this fall.

any new DA students?

Deerfield! Yay! :D

Uh oh. Deerfield’s being over-enrolled and having more girls than boys can’t be good for me, right? I’m also an international student in need of FA, making my chances 8.9%… factor in the over-enrollment + more girls than guys = ultra slim to none…
Ah well. It doesn’t hurt to dream, I suppose…

I read somewhere here on CC that internationals from Canada get priority? Forgive me if I’m wrong.

I’d love to apply to DA :)

Can you give me more general information about DA?

Also, since I’m a girl, would applying to DA as a sophomore be difficult? They’re already over enrolled, so I suppose it would be tougher?

I am also a girl applying as a repeat-sophomore, so

PEOPLE UPDATING THIS WOULD BE HELPFUL! THANKS. :D

Yes, like lemons.can.fly said, PLEASE PROVIDE MORE INFORMATION!

I have a couple more questions about Deerfield. Is it * really * that preppy? If you’re not like “them”, do you get outcasted? What about if you’re middle class and most of the others are upper middle class?

okay. well. i am not yet attending deerfield, i will be arriving there next fall. so from first appearances, it seems to me that no. they are not THAT preppy. certainly everyone dresses pretty nicely because of the dress code, but they are just normal nice people. there is a mix just like at any highschool!

also, i don’t think it really matters how much money you have. i mean, as long as you just are friendly and kind to everyone, no ones going to not like you bc of how much money you do or don’t have.

boarderkid and lemons.can.fly: i just applyed as a sophomore girl this year, not repeat though (and accepted.) and I wish you the best of luck! its a really fun admissions process! i’d be happy to help out in any way i can. and yeah, i guess it might be a bit harder because of the over enrollment, but deerfield is known for saving a lot of spots for incoming sophomores. they plan on getting about i think 65 new sophomores, so like 32 girls or so? I’m not sure how much its over enrolled for freshmen, but i don’t think its by 32, so i’m still you still have a chance.

@ livenlaugh: Aw, thank you for that offer! I may have to take you up on it ;)

…fun admissions process? Fun?! Do you know how many people usually apply for sophomore year at Deerfield?

I’m a bit confused. Looking at hyeonhoy’s post, Deerfield is over enrolled by 33 students this year? Does that mean there will be only 32 sophomore spots open this year? Which means, since there are more girls, less than 16 spots for girls?

Well, either way you can’t really change anything. I would apply and hope for the best.

True. And since I need FA, I suppose it’ll make matters worse. Unless, if I’m admitted, I apply for FA later?

Bad idea…

:( Is it really that bad of an idea? I mean, it’s one year of full tuition and then two years of hopefully FA…right?

Oh ok I guess, well you must not need it that bad if your willing to pay an extra year for an admissions advantage.

Yeah, I need FA too.
Does the over-enrollment of girls this year affect the number of girls they will accept next year?

Thanks, Livenlaugh, that was sweet. :)

haha. well you’re in luck because deerfield is a needs blind school. so they don’t even consider your finacial status when decided whether you are accepted.

as for the overenrollment thing…they are overenrolled by 30 students, here’s an article about it if you’re interested. [Crowd Control: Dealing with Next Year?s Over- Enrollment|The Scroll](http://scroll.deerfield.edu/?p=481)

Thanks for the link, livenlaugh.

It’s a need-blind school? That’s perfect! Although, do they give FA as a loan or a scholarship that doesn’t need to be repaid?

like a scholarship, no paying back involved. except, obviously its not merit based, its need based. So they use this big formula that like, calculates how much your family can afford to pay. they take into account all sorts of things, like if your parents are paying for siblings in college and how much your parents get paid and the assets they have and etc haha. hope this helps a bit.

Is there any place where my family and I can calculate our financial need?

Also, going back to the OP, what is Deerfield particularly known for? Why did you choose it, livenlaugh? Where else did you apply?

I don’t know of a place where you can calculate your financial for boarding school, but I know if you search it on google you’ll get places for college. Also, this site, Home is the like, institution or website or whatever you want to call it, that Deerfield uses to calculate your financial aids. (sorry for the less than eloquent wording!) My mom says filling out the forms is a LOT of work, so make sure your parents have plenty of time. Financial aid forms are due in february usually I believe.

(i’m not sure what OP means, I might just be really out of it…opinion? I’m going to pretend that’s right.)

I would say Deerfield is known for stellar academics, while maintaining a great community atmosphere. They also have fantastic athletics, like, really great. I met a lot of the coaches and they are always teachers, dorm parents, and just really involved. (plus of course excellent coaches!) I was really impressed. If you want me to go on and on about the things I liked, just let me know.

I know its probably over said, but the thing that made me pick Deerfield was the fact that I just got more the feel I liked there. It seemed like the people were people I would really like, Deerfield made me feel like they REALLY wanted me to go there, which was super cool and I think kind of important. It sort of set the tone for the school itself. Also, the fantastic Koch center was a big plus, because I love science. Everything was just pretty great.

Oh, and I only applied to three schools, and was accepted at Lawrenceville and Deerfield, and waitlisted at Mercersburg. Like I said, if you have any more specific questions, let me know!
