According to boardingschoolreview.com about 24% of the student body is made up of students of color. I remember reading something similar on their website or viewbook. But note that this number inculdes; African Americans, Hispanics, Asians (probably a large percentage) and Native Americans.

Taft is very similar. Great academics with a warm feel to it.

I always thought that Groton was more traditional like deerfield but I havenât really looked at Groton much.

I would not say that Choate, Taft, or Groton have âa similar feelâ to Deerfield.

CKSABS, so whatâs different about the feel of those places, in your book?

IMO CKSABS has it about right.

@momb2k. My D was was in your Dâs situation last year. Very disappointed about DA WL, but went to revisit day at Westminster (in the pouring rain!) and found it very warm with engaged students and faculty and a spectacular new academic building. She accepted and is happy beyond our dreams.

I agree that Westminster. Also maybe Governors? We didnât visit, but friends did and loved them both.

About Choate kids not liking Deerfield, I had always loved deerfield and wanted nothing more than to go there but at the same time love Choate as well. The schools are very different but yes, it is possible to like both of the schools despite the rivalry. In the end Choate actually ended up winning for me =]

Hope everyone who revisited enjoyed the weather. Very lucky timing.

momb2k: When you visit the schools youâll know what I mean. My son relied on his gut to determine where he felt comfortable. Part of his decision was based upon the campus, but he primarily made his determination on the students he met, saw, and knew at the schools. (The schools had already been âpre-filteredâ before we visited, so at some level they met his initial criteria.) When you visit Deerfield, students are noticeably happy, smiling, and friendly. For visitors, it can seem a bit surreal. Some think its fake, an act, or a show, but it is genuine. The school definitely screens for happy, friendly students.

Separately, has anyone else revisited Deerfield? If so, what are your impressions? Do you have any lingering questions? Todayâs the last âSecond Visit Dayâ.

Here are some interesting numbers from Deerfieldâs Annual Report:

Endowment as of 8/31:
2007 $386M +17%
2008 $367M -3% (I calculate -4.9%)
2009 $306M -11% (I calculate -16.6%)

An $80M decline over two years reduces income available to the school by more than $3M annually. Interestingly, the recent 11% (or 16.6%) decline makes it a better performing endowment for the year.

Although not exacly the same time frame (ends 6/30 vs 8/31 for stats above), you can see how the performance compares to the best and worst performing colleges and universities. [24/7 Wall St. 2010 Best And Worst Managed University Endowments: Harvard, Yale, And Duke Worst 24/7 Wall St.](24/7 Wall St. 2010 Best And Worst Managed University Endowments: Harvard, Yale, And Duke Worst - 24/7 Wall St.) The numbers are very scary and not for the faint hearted.

Financial aid increased from $6.1M in 2008 to $6.4M in 2009 or about 5%. This number will likely be significantly higher for 2009-2010.

Revisits are (mostly) complete, so who has chosen Deerfield for next year?

It appears weâll be seeing DeerfieldSwede, Alexz825Momâs daughter, soccer345, and alelu. Where are Metallika, doschicosâ son, lindaha, jyun212, toombs61âs nephew, and DeterminedDude headed?

Is there anyone else?

jyun212 is headed to deerfield as well, from what iâve heardâŠ

I AM SO JEALOUS OF ALL OF YOU.
âŠjust lettinâ you know :)

Anyone have any news about the Deerfield WL? I sent them an update of my stats, and they never replied.

eddy, the same thing happened to me. I e-mailed my choate interviewer and sent in more grades and stuff and they have yet to reply.

Yeah,2010, I sent Choate an update of my stuff also.
I sent a thanks email to my interviewer, but never replied.
My interviewer from Deerfield replied though.

Does choate have some kind of policy against interviewers contacting applicants? haha (or they could just be REALLY busy)

I was thinking the same thing 2010.

But I mean seriously because I have not received a single reponse from my interviewer and I e-mailed her like 3 timesâŠ

2010: Wait until after April 10th, preferably April 20th, to follow up. Admissions is extremely busy right now. They likely will not have an answer for you as there are always a few âstragglersâ revisiting after April 10th and commitment checks are âin the mail.â
