Hello, I am going to be attending deerfield next year as a sophomore. I come from a very "unpreppy" town, and I am worried about fitting in. And so I was wondering if you could tell me exactly what the ideal preppy deerfield student would wear. I have talked to a few of my rowing friends from greenwich and so far here is what I have gathered:

Have some J. Crew clothing
Have a few lacoste polos
Wear alot of green (pants, socks)
wear high white socks with your shorts
wear your hat backwards with tape on the strap to hold it in place
get a tweed jacket
some vineyard vines stuff -- ties and belts
new balance sneakers

as you can see this is not complete enough for me to scrap together a good set of clothing for next year. I would truly appreciate the opinions of current deerfield students or even recent alumni, however, if you have accurate insight into the SPECIFIC attire of a well dressed deerfield student feel free to chime in.

I have some good mates from greenwich, CT!!
I think it's quite silly to try and morph your style to fit a boarding school. I have no intentions of becoming a prepster in ANY way. I think you should stick to what makes YOU feel comfortable.
I'm amused and also astonished by everyones fascination with clothing and how they think that their wardrobe will seemingly affect their life. Wear what you like.
Haha. P.S. Hell freezes over before anyone in their right mind would tape their hat together. Is that supposed to be a statement?
Here is some fashion education--
Shop "Anthropologie" for clothes
Shop "Urban Outfitters" for accessories
^But thats just me.

If J crew floats your boat try Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilifiger as well.

How do you know that you were accepted to Deerfield?? Letters arn't out yet.

If you get accepted, go to the re-visit day and you'll be able to see what everyone wears and judge for yourself who the "well dressed" students are.

The "SPECIFIC attire of a well dressed deerfield student" varies greatly - I was on campus earlier this week and while it was after required dress hours, I saw a huge range of clothing from sweatpants and flipflops (and yes there is a significant amount of snow still) to plaid shorts and a blazer. Some, but certainly not all, hats are worn backwards.

considering it is rower10's first post, acceptance letters from Deerfield haven't been sent and the description of clothing (wear high white socks with your shorts), I suspect a troll.

troll or not, the list of clothes is pretty much spot on for Deerfield and many other prep schools out there. Backward college hats and new balances are staples.

I have not seen anyone with tape on their hat. Hat backwards maybe, but I think the "well dressed Deerfield student" would as NeLLyRaE said, also rather stick needles in their eyes than tape the hat...
(how did I miss that in the op the first time?)

crickett, although I agree with anthropologie rower10 is most likely a boy

I have no advice. I pretty much only hang out with boys in the summer and then they are pretty much only wearing swimming shorts (billabong/ o'neill if you're wondering)

I've seen the kids at Deerfield and they are pretty much just as Linda S described. Their class dress is specifield in their DA-Z handbook and yes it is still snowing in that part of the world so good warm clothing is in order. Was just reading this in case it helps anyone CEOmum: Winter Gear

haha, same crickett. i don't want a guy who buys all that preppy junk, basketball shorts and a t-shirt are good for me! LOl. how does the abercrombie/american eagle stuff go at bs? cuz i always thought that THAT stuff was preppy, but it seems i'm stepping up to a whole new level here, lol. so is that stuff considered porr now? (not that i even buy that, i'm all for Ross and Target, T-shirts for 4 dollars not forty.

When my son's school has played Deerfield in sports, I've always felt that the students in attendance as team managers, scorekeepers, etc. were trying to look as preppy as possible. We're talking a myriad of easter egg colors....light blue bermudas with pink button down and yellow tie, nantucket reds, etc.

I went to Old Navy today!! They've got some WICKED stuff! I also went along to Forever 21 and got some really nice concert clothes :)
There is no way I'm spending my savings on shopping sprees at the stores that pretentious 7th graders think are "preppy", "in", or "stylish".
And 85% of the boys at my high school don't give a second thought to what they wear so it's always some college sweatshirt and jeans. Usually the same ones. Everyday.

i love old navy!!!! and forever 21 is mazing, great stuff! and in my way of thinking, you can go to one of those fancy shmancy stores and get one skirt, or you can go to old navy and Ross and get a whole new wardrobe! LOL about the guys crickett.

Welcome to CC Rower10. I'm Tom (not the creepy Myspace one) and am also applying to Deerfield.

Obviously i will adhere to the dress code during classes but when doing homework or just hanging out i'll wear a pair of jeans, a sweatshirt, and a polo. I've been wearing polos to school my whole life so it'll hard to stop now.

One thing that i will wear all the time in my dorm are my Nike flip flops. It's sort of fruity but i can't go anywhere without them.

Haha very true. Deerfield is a very preppy school and unless you dress and act in the same preppy way, I assure you it is terribly hard to fit in. But it is all up to your choice. Would you want to transform yourself to fit in like everyone else to lose some of your individuality? Or would you rather be happy with yourself yet be able to acknowledge the fact that you will not not be able to join the popular groups?

Both my mom and I were in hysterics when we saw guys dressed in canary yellow pants and madras plaid shirts walking around Taft during my school visits. It did look like Easter--from the 60's. Believe me, those types of outfits would never cut it in the Bay Area. Not to be shallow, but if I ever brought a boy home and he was wearing "light blue bermudas with a pink button down and a yellow tie" I would stop at the nearest mall and make him buy some new clothes before he met my friends.
