@GMTplus7 if we are going to call out @thelittleswimmer for misstating the SAT scores can we also point out that @Karen0 has also added at least a good 50 points onto her kids current school SAT score, unnamed or not. I suspect swimmer is a 14 year old kid and karen is old enough to know better
I’m just going by the class of 2014 report sent out by school. I have it in front of me, all the college placements and average SAT scores and ACT scores and SAT II scores. I don’t think the school is inflating anything. But who knows? You are far more aware of these facts as I just started looking at anything in December. My DS didn’t think about applying out until after the December break. Yesterday DS was accepted to all three day schools he applied to in our city, all very competitive with low admission rates but only one will allow him to repeat 9th grade the other two say he would need to enter as 10th grader in the fall. DS not interested in going to another day school and would rather stay where he is or go to boarding school.
@karen0 don’t get me wrong I totally absolutely understand why a NYC boy wants to go to boarding and I think repeating is a great idea. I have several kids and one of them is old for the class and its been great. Regarding the Deerfield birthday statistic, birthdays don’t always tell the full story any kid who started kindergarden later will have an earlier birthday although they aren’t repeats. I’m with you, if you can afford it how can it hurt? An admissions person in K (at either your son’s school or one of the others you are talking about as it is a very small town) told me that the “gift of time” is the best thing you can give your kid and they have seen only good things of starting kids in K late.
With a late July b-day I wish DS had started K late, I was unaware of the benefits when he was 4. I know the Deerfield birthday statistic only gives part of the story, these kids are coming from so many countries and birthday cut offs are very arbitrary. While on the surface my DS appears to be doing well to coaches, other students and parents, to most teachers, as his mother I know he will benefit tremendously by an extra year. The fact that he wants to go to boarding school makes it work possibly, if he gets in. DS is not willing to repeat in our city, although he does have the opportunity to do so. I get it.
For what it’s worth, I absolutely think lots of kids (especially boys) do really well as repeats. I was mostly just trying to give you some data to say, if you do repeat, he’ll fit in fine, and no longer be one of the youngest. Everyone talks about repeats and I just thought it would be interesting to see how the age range really looked.
I can also tell you that with the 2 of my kids with March birthdays they are amongst the youngest in their classes in NYC private day school. There are no boys in any of my kids classes with July birthday who didn’t start K after turning 6.
DA mean SAT for combined Classes of 2012-13-14 V665 M674 W671 = 2010. PEA 2014 V696 M712 W699 = 2107. Of interest is PEA’s comparatively low mean ACT of 29. Not adjusted for PG’s and repeats (recalculants? recalculateds? RC’s?).
It’s not bcs of int’l students. The int’l students I interview overseas tend to be just the opposite: accelerated a year.
In regards to deerfield, connor K was a double repeat: a 19 old junior when he was dating taylor S.
I would keep updating AOs with his grades until you hear. Also, why not use your connections? I understand the urge to let him get in in his own, but other people use connections (not sure how useful they are), so why shouldn’t you. If you are confident he can handle the school work and has the maturity to not procrastinate, get him in the door. Who cares how? There are no style points on March 10th, just Yes, No, Maybe.
Has child had contact with coaches? They can tip the scale depending on the sport and your child’s value.
FWIW, my child applied as a reclassified 9th grader last year, no FA, SSAT superscore in mid 80s, As and Bs (including b-) in all honors classes at strong public school. Recruited athlete. Applied to 4 of the schools on your list, got into 3, WL at one.
agreed re the connections
Thank you PSM2013 for the info about your DS last year. Yes, my DS has met with coaches at some of the schools he applied. On most days of the month I think DS can handle the work and not procrastinate, but every now and then I question how motivated he is. I fear that if I use connections and if things don’t work out the way we hope I’ll never forgive myself. That was also why I didn’t have him tutored for the SSAT. While we didn’t use connections to get him into his current school during the K admissions process 10 years ago, I do think our parent profile helped (at the time my husband and I had somewhat high profile jobs). In the end, it was my son who got the raw end of the stick by being 12 to 14 months younger than many of his classmates. I not making that mistake again, this time I want this to be all about what an AO or committee thinks about him.
@thelittleswimmer It is so interesting for me to see the reasons why you are attending BS, like you very well say it: "Because it will open many opportunities for me (that I would not be able to have in your state/hometown) and you explain how you love the diversity and the support system at BS-and the hope that you will have an amazing high school experience. Your description pretty much sums up all the reasons why I will be sending my daughter to Taft in the fall ( next week) I wanted to ask you if you know students or parents at the school or have information about all the points you mention on your post regarding Taft school, meaning: Does Taft provide all of the elements that you mention to provide their students with an amazing high school experience? Do you know if Taft has a supporting student body, diversity and a strong support system? Some posters have wrote comments saying that they perceive Taft’s environment is more ‘tough, serious and conservative’ than other schools. Do you happen to know if that is true? My hope is that my daughter will come out transformed into a wonderful and happy adult after a great experience and the words ‘tough, serious and conservative’ seem a little scary.
I also wanted to ask @GMTplus7, since you are so strong on finding data and accurate information about BS ( I have read many of your older posts) do you know if Taft has a good number of international students compared to other schools? Are there any statistics or charts about the percentage of Int. students at boarding schools other than what they show on their web page and catalog? It is also my perception that Taft has a more conservative amount of Int. students than other schools and I didn’t realize that before (we are an international family) As I said, it’s just a perception from what I’ve read on CC, so I would like to know if it is true. Thanks!
