Hey. I'm a new Deerfield student (just finished my first term!). I remember this board was really pretty helpful to me learning more about the school and gaining some general knowledge when I knew absolutely NOTHING about boarding school. And it was always really helpful to have a kid from the school answering questions. So fire away!

I’m a prospective student interested in Deerfield.
I have a few questions…

What do student’s do on weekends at Deerfield?
Like are the dances and events the school sets up fun?
Also, How is the workload?
About how long do you spend time on homework?

What do student’s do on weekends at Deerfield?
There is this restaurant/hang out place called the Greer where a lot of people hang out on weekends. Usually there is a dance/fun event (we’ve had a phsycic and a magician/hypnotist this term, both really fun) and a lot of the school goes to those. It’s really easy to take a cab into greenfield to go out to eat, and people do that a lot as well. (8.50 for a 7 person cab, so its really cheap if you just get a group together!) Also, just chilling out in the dorms. You can get parietals in a guys dorm, or get started on some homework (haha!)

Also, How is the workload?
Workload is not too bad. 2-3 hours a night for a Sophomore. For a freshman, its a little less. More like 2 hours. You have a two hour study hall (7:45 - 9:45) in which to do homework. And usually, if I start around 7 I finish all my homework by 9:45. So I would say the workload is not overwhelming. but you do have to work hard, and study for tests, and not get behind in any of your classes. That’s when it can get overwhelming. Ask for help if you need it!

Was Deerfield as good as you expected? Better in some ways, a little harder adjusting than I anticipated in others.
What’s the student body like? That’s a tough question. Your experience really just depends on who you get to know, but it can definitely be hard to get to know people. There are certainly a lot of people from the East Coast (New York City, Mass, Connecticut) and there are also quite a large number of people from California. But then again, you also meet a lot of international kids, which is super cool. I’m from the mid-west, and it’s a little weird adjusting to the east coast culture and I think it’s harder to get to know people if you have less connections with the school/east coast culture, but there are plenty of nice people from the East Coast. it’s hard to explain haha! But overall, your experience totally depends on you.

Friendly/helpful? Everyone here is friendly and helpful.

hope this helps. if you have any follow up questions, fire away haha.

What extracurriculars are you in and are they fun?
I did soccer first term, it was great. I’ll be doing swimming starting on Sunday (beginning of the next term), which I am SO excited for. Yep, extracurriculars are a lot of fun.

Dorm rooms are nice! bathrooms are exactly what you would expect. Very clean, certainly nothing to worry about haha.

um. hottest girls? this should not play any part in your decision. but all of us girls at deerfield are pretty gorgeous if I do say so myself lol.

What are some traditions at Deerfield besides Choate Day?
I am from the midwest as well, and only know of 2 people from the midwest that are currently enrolled at DA, how strong is the midwest representation?

What are your opinions on DA’s “unique” essay question?

3 hours of HW? Really? I find that hard to believe, unless you are exceptionally efficient at time management.

I don’t think the international students get shunned. When I toured they seemed intergrated very nicely. Although I have heard that Koreans hangout together…
