DEERFIELD vs EXETER

Deerfield NO Saturdays school, Preppy
Exeter Saturday school, too big
I need some pros and cons...Just reasons why you will choose any of them.

i think you have your answer… :stuck_out_tongue:
are you willing to put up with preppy or big-ness that you don’t seem to like?

Deerfield would be my pick! I don’t think I know enough to allow myself to give you a list of pros and cons

Sit down meals with faculty, plus or minus?

Plus with most parents, teens, not so much ----lol

If you’re gettin FA which school is offering you the most? If you’re not well it’s personal, athletic and academic preferences that should determine your chioce. I think Exeter is more of a Math/Scince school while Deerfield is very athletic and more inclined towards humanities.

Alexz825Mom: My son was hesitant at first about the sit-down meals because he did not like them at his prior school. However, he has admitted that they are much better than he expected and the food is very good too! :)

When my son and I went through the app process last year, we found DA to have, on the whole, the warmest and most pleasant interviewers, guides, students and admission officers of the 10 great BS’s to which he applied. PEA, sadly, had the coldest and least pleasant. Maybe it was just us…but I doubt it. That said, there is more to a BS than smiling faces and warm handshakes. Still, our dealings with DA were much more enjoyable than those with Exeter, for whatever that is worth.

i agree with toombs61; I’ve said before “…every time I go there its like death has settled upon the campus and is just waiting to pick people off”

I think the atmosphere at Exeter is very friendly and like it was previous mentioned go with the one that offers the most financial aid.

They are all different types of schools:

Deerfield:
Smaller then Exeter or Andover, similar to Hotchkiss
Close net family feeling, safe environment, schools is a rural setting.
Deerfield has better facilities then Exeter, from what I have seen.
Beautiful campuses
Lower number of Students of color. (Hotchkiss, Exeter, Andover, Melton have higher no. of student of color compare to Deerfield)
Lower acceptance rate compared to other schools like Exeter & Andover.
Cost of tuition much higher compared to Exeter.
Deerfield has good and stable FA resources.
Has fewer PA courses compared to Hotchkiss, Exeter etc.
Considered the Top 5 schools.

Hotchkiss:
Smaller then Exeter or Andover, similar to Deerfield
Close net family feeling, safe environment, schools is a rural setting.
Hotchkiss has the best facilities I have seen.
Hotchkiss is one of the most beautiful campuses, 810 acres
High Number of Students of color. (Exeter, Andover, Melton also have high no. of student of color compare to Deerfield)
More no. of international students.
Higher Average SAT score compared to Deerfield.
This year it seems to have the lowest acceptance rate compared to other schools. (Excluding Groton, Thatcher, Westminster)
Cost of tuition much higher compared to Exeter and Deerfield
Hotchkiss has good, stable FA resources.
Has one of the highest endowments per student. (Similar to StPaul).
Has most no. of PA courses if you want to be challenged and benefit in receiving credits when you start to attend college
Considered the Top 5 schools.

Exeter:
One of the largest schools in US, Similar to Andover.
School is part of the Town Exeter. Traffic passes through school. Part of urban setting.
Less structured environments.
Good for very independent student who can live and take care of themselves on their own.
Academic competition is strong within the school. Most students got 90% or above in their SSAT scores. You may feel competition very strong related to studies. (You need to have fun too at the schools u plan to attend the next 4 years)
Seem to have more hype then Hotchkiss and Deerfield.
Higher diversity
Higher students of Color (Similar to Hotchkiss, Andover, Milton)
Has one of the highest FA available.
Easy to get FA.
Is one of the lowest tuition cost.
Considered the Top 5 schools.

You need to check how you fit in, what feels right. After all you will be staying next 4 years at this school.

Don’t base your decision on getting calls from schools or admission staff influencing you, or from ABC advisors. Talk to current students, attend classes during re-visit etc. and make the right decision. Any of the HADES school are good.

Decision time: April 10 2010 is coming fast.

I would guess that Deerfield has a much tougher social scene to break into that Exeter

lindha, are you going to revisit both schools? If so, if you still can’t decide after the revisits come back and discuss again. This discussion is good. Now that you know the differences on paper, you need to FEEL them.

Yes I’m going to visit Exeter and DA. It will be an overnight trip for both. I cannot wait!
Thxss to everyone that have been posting on this thread.

Lindha

If you are visiting Deerfield, try to re-visit Hotchkiss too. They are close by. Hotchkiss and Deerfield are about 2-2.5 hrs away (driving distance).

Personally I’m still trying to work out who (outside of CC children who have yet to attend BS) decided that Hotchkiss, Andover, Deerfield, Exeter and SPS are “considered the top 5 schools”

Good luck with that one, Blue

newebs I’m also visiting Hotchkiss…It will be my last revisit.

I know… I’m fighting a losing battle but oh what a wonderful fight! Thanks for the luck, I’m going to need it.

U also got accepted to Groton right ?

Yup, I’m going to be Groton '14. I was accepted THS, Groton, WLed DA and SPS. No rejections but a WL practically is. Groton was my first choice anyway.
