Deerfield vs. Hotchkiss

if you got into both which place would you rather go to?

Exeter
(What other choice would you choose :))

deerfield for sure!

Are they the same? kidding. :)

One of our friends decided not to let their child apply to DA after the interview. During the interview, the interviewer was nosy about what the grandparents do and their family background, which made them uncomfortable. Not that there is anything wrong with the grandparents, just the fact he asked this type of questions. Not only not applying for DA, they also canceled their appointment with Hotchkiss, because they heard it was worse in Hotchkiss.

No offense to any school, just telling a true story.

HK–we found a number of kids sleeping on floors and benches in the middle of the day. Fed into its reputation and our fear that HK is a pressure cooker. Have to be pretty tough and competitive to make it there.

I would rather go to Hotchkiss!!!
Aren’t Deerfield and Hotchkiss in the middle of nowhere?

Hotchkiss is more remote than Deerfield.

My son chose Deerfield. On revisit day last spring, he met two others with the same choice with one heavily favoring Hotchkiss. By day’s end, all had decided on Deerfield.

Assign: True, Deerfield is not in or near a major metropolis and there is not much in Historic Deerfield. However, there is the unfortunate misperception that it is in the middle of nowhere. I suppose it depends on your definition. It’s about 10 minutes to Greenfield for decent restaurants and basic shopping. It’s about 20-25 minutes to Amherst and Northampton for very good shopping and restaurants. Heck, I live a few miles from the second largest city in New England and it still takes at least 10 minutes to go anywhere.

agree with urbanflop

i went to HADES for my interviews, and i found hochkiss and deerfield not as good as I had expected. I would go to exeter or andover haha

My son applied to and visited both THS and DA last year. We found both schools quite similar in size, location, beauty and appeal. Both Hotchkiss and Deerfiled are great and attractive schools. In the end, the main difference to me between these two wonderful schools was that THS offered the language my son was then, and wished to continue, studying; DA did not.

My son is now at Hotchkiss. It has exceeded all of the expectations we had for it. I’m sure that the students now attending DA love it as much as my son now loves THS. I don’t see how anyone could go wrong at all by attending either Deerfield or Hotchkiss.

Good luck to all who are now applying to BS’s!

Deerfield, most definitely!

I have a strong dislike of HK ; idk just b/c… :/

Haha…me to rad, sort of, i don’t strongly dislike HK, its just appeal to me all that much

How you come to like or dislike a school is tricky. When we arrived at HK for school visit, I thought for the first time I understood what “in the middle of nowhere” truely meant, but when I stepped into the grand buildings and toured their state-of-the-art facilities, I was so very impressed, and started to get why they said it was a “previlege” to be educated in an institution like this. Then we met a friend’s child who was studying at HK. He was so unhappy there and couldn’t wait to leave. That naturally got us concerned. In the end, we felt that the school was still a great school, and that we would choose it if it was the “best” offer we’d get. At the same time, we didn’t fall in love with it so it wouldn’t be a particularly heavy blow if they rejected us. Eventually, my kid was waitlisted by HK, so we dropped out of their wait list the next day. That was it.
