Nothing on WA.

i was accepted, though i feel lucky seeing the stats of those who got deferred, and from what you’re all writing, the option that asks for seventh semester grades seems to be somewhat more favorable… i believe that UM wouldn’t want extraneous information, your senior year grades, from the “less” qualified applicants of those deferred, flooding their already completely flooded office…so if they want your grades, they probably think you stand more of a shot than if they told you otherwise…yay? nay?

^ yea i kinda agree with you even though i have the no 7th semester grade needed deferral letter

bump, hopefully more people will see this and reply

i’m kind of wishing i got letter 1 now…just took midterms and i think i got a c on calc
i don’t want to show them my fall grades anymore lol

lol…yea…this letter thing is confusing… BUMPITUP

I applied to the school of art & design.

My letter is slightly different:

Dear ______,
Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan School of Art & Design. We have deferred a decision on your admissibility for the fall 2009 semester. We have completed a first review of your application; however, we will not reach a final decision until later in our processing period.

The School of Art & Design is committed to providing an environment of excellence for all students. We need more time with your application because we want our final decisions to be as thoughtfully and carefully considered as possible. So, we ask for your patience while we continue this process.

While I cannot predict what decision we will eventually make, you are still among the pool of serious candidates that we are considering for admission. We hope that you will be encouraged by this news. We expect to finalize our review of applications and notify you no later than April 15.

In the meantime, have your seventh semester grades sent to us, stay focused at school, work hard, and continue your creative work. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Assistant Dean Joann McDaniel in the School of Art & Design at 734.764.0397.

Best wishes for a successful senior year.

Sincerely,
Mary Schmidt

imho, the 2nd letter is better – since they are very interested in viewing your grades. The first letter has a slightly depressing tone, but I may be wrong. Mine is a combo I believe, they didn’t stress the seventh semester grades being sent, but I guess it couldn’t hurt. (I tried pretty hard first quarter.)

Cowmoocher, just remember that the School of Art & Design is looking at your portfolio as much as your grades and tests. We have found them to be very personal in their approach. Were you able to show your portfolio in person? I don’t have any experience with deferrals, but judging from my conversations with the admissions people at Art & Design, I think it would help to keep them up to date on any new work you do, like sending any news of works you might have in a show, or more work you do could be sent. I would call and ask Joann or Katrina if they would consider additional pieces of art that you are doing, and maybe send them in digitally to your portfolio reviewer. Good Luck.

svtcobra, i was thinking the same thing…i got a C in calc and i was wondering about not sending in my fall grades.

does anyone know if it will hurt me if i dont send in fall grades? 3 A’s, 3 B’s, and a C (4 AP’s)

btw, i am deferral 1

i called admissions and asked them. they said that it wont hurt me, and they will only judge based on whats currently in my application. but thats such a generic answer, and i just think they tell that to everyone, idk.

if i were you i’d recalculate your u of m gpa (but including fall grades this time). send if it’s higher or the same as your initial one, don’t if it’s lower.

i have letter 1(no fall grades required). but my fall final grades come out in two weeks, should i still send them my fall grades if i dont receive my decision by then?

SAT (1600): 1520
SAT (2400): 2320
SAT IIs: 800 Math II, 800 Chem
GPA: 3.58 (UM gpa is probably lower, especially because of my grading scale)

Michart, I had my portfolio reviewed at National Portfolio Day in Brooklyn. It went pretty well; the reviewer was impressed. I emailed him yesterday asking about what I can do to aid them in their decision. I will take your advice and contact Joann. (Is Katrina another rep? If so can you forward me her contact information?) I have a few new pieces that I can show them, but I was under the impression that since it is such a big school I shouldn’t bother sending any additional information in.

Thank you for your quick response :}

I think you are doing the right thing. Michigan is a big school, but the Art School is small, so I would treat it that way. As I said, I don’t know much about deferrals, but they just seem very personal in their approach, so it can’t hurt to go with that. Since we are local, we went to Ann Arbor to show them my daughter’s portfolio, so we got a sense of how hands on they all seem to be.

i got deferral letter 1 and i dont know if i should send in my grades…
B in honors level band
A+ in gym
B in AP Calc AB
B in AP Music Theory AP
C in Macroecon AP
C in English IV Accel

what do you guys think?

i have option 2. i have to sent it in. and i got a C in BC calc. what should i do? does that i mean i have no chance for school of art?
and can any one who got op. 1 link me to their portfolio?
i just want to compare and see if it is because of my portfolio?
feel so bummed.

beast 53, thats a UM gpa of 2.6…and im assuming thats much lower than ur gpa that was originally on your transcript when u applied.

even though you have a really hard course load, i think sending the grades in would have a negative impact on you application.

i got letter 1 as well, and a similar senior fall gpa (with 4 ap’s). i am most likely not going to send mine in.

thanks for the advice uofm33

is ap music theory and ap macroecon part of the um gpa? thanks

macro would be included

and i think ap music theory would be as well. but i don’t really know anything about the class so i can’t say so for sure. i know they don’t count regular music classes (i.e. band)
