Defered, now panicking

I was defered from my ED school, UPenn

so now im panicking because I really need to find some other similar schools I like.

Im already looking at Georgetown, Northwestern and Boston College, but what are some other schools with a similiar atmosphere?

Im planning on majoring in either communications or polisci...

thanks!!

Perhaps you would like Duke.

Maybe Michigan, UCLA or USC.

Wustl!!!

Thanks I would rather go to a school on the east coast though, so no UCLA or USC for me.

make sure you have a school you apply to a school you can get into…gtown and northwestern are just as hard to get into as upenn, and bc isn’t that far behind.

What about schools like Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette or Holy Cross.

They aren’t quite as hard–higher acceptance rates, slightly lower SAT ranges–but they aren’t far behind. BC’s a bit less difficult, with even lower SAT ranges.

If you were deferred, then call and see if there is anything you can do to supplement your application and strengthen it . The problem now becomes that all the kids deferred or rejected at HYP et al will run for cover to schools like Tufts, Middlebury, UVa, Georgetown, Hamilton, Washington and Lee, etc…WashU…all the usual suspects who scoop up these excellent candidates…so you will have more competition at RD. Not to discourage you. You may very well be accepted RD. But cover your bases.

Do NOT apply somewhere else EDII unless you are willing to walk away from Penn completely. Don’t emote about this. Be rational and calm and think through your actions. Yes, its painful for now, but it will work out.

Then, make application to some match and safety schools that you LIKE and can see yourself at…and apply RD to them. Yes, you have to wait until April and that is a pain in the neck. But you are NOT alone. TENS OF THOUSANDS are just like you.

We went through this last year…and waited until April..and lo and behold we had an epiphany and accepted an offer from a match school…and my D is very, very happy there.

Your interests are wonderful and also common..meaning there are LOTS of schools that offer those programs…and are wonderful.

embrace your safety and match schools…they will take you and they may even offer MORE money.

Sorry about the deferral. But now its time to be rational and focused with little time to make a decision.
Go where you will be happiest…and fit in the best. Go visit some more schools and ask yourself, “is this me? are people like me? are they friendly and warm? are they happy and having fun…or are they stressed and frenetic?”

Too many kids think they will only be happy and successful at one particular school…but they fail to keep an arm’s length emotional distance..and when bad news comes..they are crushed…and then start making more bad decisions in anger or frustration. Dont do that. Be calm, rational and reasonable. Take a day or two to blow off your frustration..that is normal. Then get to work on new applications and like I said, embrace your match and safety schools. Focus on two schools you REALLY like…not based on prestige but based on who you are as a person, your interests, culture, personality etc. You too will have an Epiphany as we did last April. Its like the parting of the Nile.

Dont be afraid of second tier schools… You may find a jewel just waiting for you. Schools like Holy Cross, Fordham, Hamilton, Colgate, Haverford, Bucknell, George Washington, Emory, Washington and Lee, UVa, the list is almost endless.

Believe me. Good luck.

^I know this wasn’t for me, but… I was really in need of your words, Swansong. Thank you, thank you!!

You are VERY welcome, agldro. That is what this is all about…helping kids realize its not them, its a screwy and arbitrary process a lot of the time. Its painful at first, but a GROWING opportunity. Show the world how tough you are and how mature and stoic and move on. Dont emote. My D cried for a day or two and then we got down to work. It worked out BEAUTIFULLY for her and looking backwards sees it was almost like God’s plan at work.

And she is very, very happy where she is.

Good luck to you!

Great post Swansong!

Syracuse is a matchier school that might appeal to you.

Just because you got deferred at Penn doesn’t mean that you won’t make any school on Penn’s level of selectivity. Some people get rejected from Yale and make Harvard. Why? Nobody knows for sure. Go for Northwestern, Duke, Georgetown, etc. and just make sure that you throw in a safety you’d be willing to attend in a worst-case scenario.

Duke and Northwestern for sure. Perhaps Dartmouth and Brown.

Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon & U. of Rochester.

id take a look at dartmouth and columbia in your position

I know you said east coast, but Notre Dame is similar to some of the other schools you mentioned. There is no communications major, but there is a minor in Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy.

Holy Cross, Colgate, and Bucknell all offer very good academics/athletics(Patriot League schools that play Ivies in most sports). HC has a strong alumni network in Washington, with 1 Senator, several Congreesmen, Supreme Court Justice. HC also is only 1 hour from Boston.

Oh…and that glib talking head Chris Matthews too, right par? LOL.

But while we are mentioning Holy Cross, Colgate and Bucknell, lets also mention Fordham: Geraldine Ferraro, Vince Lombardi, Denzel Washington, Alan Alda. Incredible internships in New York and Washington.
