Defered...wat to do now

Should I send additional recommendations? Another portfolio? list of new activities I’ve done?

any help would be appreciated!

congrats to those who got in

The first thing you should do is finish any outstanding applications to other schools. Once those are finished, ask your guidance counselor to call Brown to see if there are some specific questions they'd like answered. Send your mid-year report as soon as it's available. It also never hurts to send a letter reiterating why Brown and you are a good match. Another well-chosen recommendation, perhaps from a senior year teacher, can also help. But, again, before you worry about all of that, get your applications to other schools in first. You have time to send extra stuff to Brown, but deadlines are drawing near for other schools. Treat their applications as seriously as you treated Brown's. Good luck!

essays: pretty unique - wrote about my family difficulties in relation to autistic children

Recommendations : mostly awesome cus I helped to write them as my teachers are too lazy...

I agree with your first respondent. Submit elsewhere just in case. Specifically, some other schools like U. Wash of St. Louis (which is alot like Brown) have a second wave of early decision.

Does anyone know the percentage of deferred ED applicants that are accepted RD?

It appears that around this time last year, Brown ED site had numerous messages indicating many acceptances. This year's message board indicates a significant lack of activity in posting. Therefore, I suspect the deferral rate for this year may be greater than last year.

It wouldn't surprise me if this is truly the case, especially since both Harvard and Yale have made public announcements that they will be doing away with EDs. Perhaps the impact of these decisions has influenced this year's admission rates too.

Dr Psedrish, Could you kindly post your thoughts regarding the rate of acceptance for ED this year?

Many thanks,
Pharma Mom

Did you send in portfolio of artwork, video of salsa dancing and copy of art film? If not, be sure to do so.

Also, can you retake the SAT in Jan? The V score is low.

yeah I sent in a portfolio of artwork, I'm thinking of sending in a more updated one with life drawing in it, and maybe a copy of the school magazine that I helped to edit...

I DEFinetely dont want to take the SATs again, theres no way my score could go up in this short amount of time... I really think i did my best! I thought they might consider that I'm from a British school in HongKong.

Does anyone know whats a good time to send the deferral letter to the school? and should it be sent to just admissions officer, or the one reading my area?

Over one half of this year's ED applicants were deferred.
Please remember that overall, Brown only accepts approximately 13% of its total applicants. That means that there is an 87% chance of not getting accepted. Nearly every applicant has an application portfolio at least as good as yours. Do not take this decision personally. When thousands of applciations and supporting documents are ditting on the desk, yours is just one more good one in a sea of paper.

The sad truth is that after a certain point, it becomes a crapshoot, a simple roll of the dice. And the odds do not favor most applicants.

Even though they will consdier your Hong Kong location, a 600 V score will be worrisome. They will worry about your ability to keep up with the massive amount of reading.

How many times have you taken the SAT?

Consider getting the Prncetom Review SAt study guide and reviewing the SAT word list by:

Crossing off the words you already know

Making flash cards of the words you don't know

Memorizing those flashcards. You should be able to do that failry quickly.

Also, if you've already sent in a portfolio then let that stand as is. avideo of some of your unusual ECs might make more sense. Think out of the box.

yeah, i got deferred from Brown as well. Does anyone have specific stats on what percentage were deferred? I heard that Harvard only rejects 4% of ED applicants, accepts something like 16% or w/e it is, and then defers the remaining 80%. I hope that's not the case with Brown....

Don't even bother. Get ready to flip burger's at Wendy's. Respek.

I was deferred ED from Brown and I am wondering if it is at all likely that i will be accepted RD, or what I could do to help my odds.

Here is my information.
I scored 790 M 790 W 720 CR on the SAT1.
My weighted GPA is a little above 4.0, but my rank is just outside top 10%
I scored 710 on the French SAT2 and 670 on Math2C and Bio E. I scored 660 on Literature.
My teacher recs and counselor recs were all very good.
My dad attended Brown, as did his mother.
I am a white male from a public high school in Northern California.

2 years varsity water polo, 1 year varsity swimming
head of Saferide, a student-run designated driver program.
3 years on school paper, currently a senior writer
NHS
High School volunteer coordinator for local elementary school district Junior Olympics.

thanks for any advice you can give on what i should/should not do.

double legacy, good numbers, you have a decent shot.

The admissions office defers a lot of qualified applicants in the ED round, so as to not take up too much space for the class. Remeber the RD kids are awesome too and the admissions office is aware of this.

Being from the West Coast might be looked upon favorably. They all want geographic diversity these days, and your numbers are certainly good enough to make you a strong candidate. I'm sure you'll get serious consideration RD.
