Deferral and Applying to Another College

I am supposed to start a PhD program in the fall. However, it's likely that I'll be FORCED to take a deferral (for a reason I'd rather not discuss). I have no choice in the matter. This is important to note because of what I'll say next.

Since I probably won't be starting grad school until Fall 2009, I figured, why not apply to a school I got rejected from? Now I'm extremely satisfied with the school from which I accepted their offer of admission and its probably a better fit, but why not give myself some options? Is this allowed? Technically, I'm a deferred student, but does that mean you're forbidden from applying to other schools? Again, I'm not deferring because I want to apply to this other school.

You need to look at what your acceptance entails. If you signed that you would not apply to other schools, you are taking a risk of losing your current spot and a spot to your other school for breaking a contract. Some schools are very specific about this. Others don't have any such restrictions.
