"Thank you for applying to the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. We have been working on the evaluation of your application, and I am writing now with news.

We have decided to postpone making a decision on your application at this time. While this may not be the answer you were hoping to hear, it is still good news. Your application is one of a carefully selected group that is under consideration for a place in the School."

It goes on to say something along the lines of “While I can’t predict what decision we will eventually make…” That’s the million dollar question – does anybody know about what percentage (if that’s the case) of auditionees are deferred in a season? Are any deferred students eventually flat-out accepted? Waitlisted?

It’s going to be a long wait until April… Would love to know of others’ experiences with a UMich deferral for Musical Theatre. Also, anyone know of acceptances from the November audition?

Yes, deferred students are accepted. Your D’s result is very very positive. Most schools do not want to admit too many this early on and want to wait until all auditions are completed to form the final class. Michigan accepts a small number as they go along but they also hold onto a number (deferred) on their pile until they see all auditions by the end of the season. My D has a friend who was accepted to Michigan after being in the deferral pile. This is how it is done there. They can’t accept many from the earlier auditions before seeing the rest of the auditions. So, they release many through rejections but hold onto some for consideration until all auditions are completed. Think of it as making a “cut”! (this has nothing to do with wait list) So far so good for your D!

First let me congratulate you on your daughters deferral. My daughter was also deferred last year after the first round of auditions at Michigan. Michigan was her first choice and her dream school. After months of waiting with many other acceptances and rejections rolling in we found out she was then wait listed at Michigan.
She had really given up hope, and then received a phone call from Laura Hoffman on April 28th that she had been accepted.
I can’t begin to describe the feeling of that day. My best advice is to communicate with the school, (ie…thank you letter after audition…) and if she really wants to go there express that desire later on in an e-mail. My daughter did that after she found out she was wait listed. I don’t know if that made the difference as the wait list is very small.
She couldn’t be happier. Best of Luck and trust this crazy process as you really do end up where you are meant to!

Thanks, bwaymom21! It’s good to know how one deferral worked out, and I’m so happy your daughter is having a great experience! You mentioned keeping in touch, and I think that’s a great idea. Wondering if she should send an updated resume, as she’s been cast in another show and is doing some choreography since the last copy they have, or if that’s overkill?

I really wouldn’t worry about resume or additional show experience. Your daughter must obviously have the talent for a program like Michigan, otherwise she wouldn’t have been deferred. As it gets closer to them selecting their class…say in March sometime…If she is still sincerely interested in going to Michigan above any other program, I would send an e-mail to Mr. Wagner. My daughter sent this e-mail only after she was wait listed, but he did respond to her. Knowing what I know now, I would have sent this extra e-mail earlier.
Best of luck to you, and if she should get into Michigan…It is an incredible program and one I am sure she will love!

Congratulations Mommafrog and your daughter!!! What great news for the holidays! My daughter is a sophomore at Michigan and like bwaymom21 daughter couldn’t be happier in this fabulous program. As Soozievt stated above a deferral is GREAT news. In the past two years classes I believe only one each year has been accepted from the November auditions, some deferred. They are very careful to leave openings throughout all of their audition dates which go into March. They do not end up accepting many more than the class size they want. My daughters year she was the last scholarship audition left at Michigan in early March so she only had to wait one week to hear…but many in her class had been on the deferred list prior to acceptance. Best of luck!! Such great news!! Congratulations again and Happiest of Holidays to you and your daughter!!

Congratulations to you and your talented D Mommafrog! Don’t know about any acceptances from the first round of auditions, but My D knows a boy from MPulse who also received a deferral from UM. It must be so great to know you are still in the running at such a competitive program. Fingers and toes crossed for you! Enjoy the Holidays!

Another UM mom here who knows some students who got in after being deferred and/or waitlisted. But we do, unfortunately, also know a number of students who were waitlisted, and did not get in : ( But a deferral at this point in auditions is definitely promising - congrats to your d, mommafrog!

Thanks, everyone for helping as we hunker down and wait for more news. But here’s another question – since she won’t hear anything about possible admission until April, does that knock her out of contention for scholarships? Looking on UM’s site, “equal consideration for scholarships is given to students who have been admitted by 2/1”. She applied in September, auditioned in November…but with the deferral…won’t hear until April. She’s got the academic stats for most merit awards offered by colleges… We were told at the financial aid meeting not to hold our breath for any talent dollars for anyone in the MT major, and without some academic merit money, UMich would really be out of reach… Any ideas if she could qualify for scholarships as she waits?

mommafrog I feel I have been responding more than I should be recently, but just trying to be helpful. The year my daughter auditioned was the last date in March that was still open for scholarship consideration. We were in the same boat as you, that without scholarship help, Michigan was out of reach. My daughter was accepted a week after her audition, so mid March…she received both an academic and merit scholarship, which allowed her to attend. I know that money is tight at Michigan and they cannot help all that they want to, but do not lose hope!! She could hear before April, keep the faith! Also, stay in touch with all schools that accept her or have her on their list…let them know of your continued interest. It doesn’t hurt. Best of luck…I so enjoy your posts…tongue in cheek and all!!

My son also got a deferral from University of Michigan today. Does anyone have any idea of the numbers from past years (how many deferred–how many of those eventually accepted)? Just trying to get a feel for his odds. Still very excited to get this far.

So here’s a question – kiddo is still in “don’t call us…we’ll call you” deferral limbo from November. Since she has neither been accepted nor rejected, does she need to send midyear grades? If so, are these requested by the university, or do they assume you know to have them sent? (Only child…I am so not good at this stuff!) This is first semester report? Anybody (or everybody???) send these already?

Mommafrog - we were in the same boat last year and never sent a mid-year grade report. Your daughter has been accepted academically already and if your deferral turns into an acceptance you will have to send the final grades at the end of the year. I would not worry about it.

Thanks, bwaymom21! It seems that every program (and these kids NEED to have so many application irons in the fire!) has different rules and regs, and if you miss one somewhere, that could end up as a disqualifier…now back to waiting…
