Deferral is Not Death

I am posting this before December 12 so that some may not go into depression if they receive the unexpected "Deferred" decision on that date. You can be accepted, rejected or deferred on December 12. Deferred simply means that a decision will be made on you after all applications are in and you will receive final word mid-February. For many, deferral does not mean you face likely rejection. In fact, majority of those deferred are ultimately admitted.

This particularly applies to those who have applied to the business or engineering colleges. The business college has the lowest admission rate (in last few years below 45%) and in the past it has held off on the majority of its decisions until all applications are in because the college prefers making most decisions after it sees the entire pool of applicants, with the result that large numbers are deferred. Engineering actually has one of the highest admission rates (usually somewhat higher than UIUC's published university wide admission rate which often hovers around 68%); the anomaly of having the highest middle 50% ranges is caused by the fact that most who actually apply for engineering are well within those high ranges. It also in the past has held off on a lot of its decisions (although not quite the majority) until after it knows the entire pool of applicants. Bottom line: if you are deferred, it is not cause for panic.

Thanks for the info, I really was worried for my S

thanks drusba that was an extremely encouraging read.
can i ask you one thing though?
where did you get this data?

Generally, I prefer avoiding answering identifying posts but you can assume it is from data available to me. Deferred business means you are still in the running, likewise for alternate choice which they are not giving you now because you are still in the running for business.

thanks drusba for the info, however i am slightly confused.
the applicant in the following thread also applied for business but unlike me he did get into his alternate major.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-illinois-urbana-champaign/614217-admit-alternate-choice-now-what.html

no offense to that applicant, but is the reason why he/she was admited to the alternate major an indication that he/she is no longer in running for business? As a result, he/she is offered acceptance to the alternate major?

I am sorry for being paranoid but UIUC is one of my top choices :(

It means that the applicant was rejected by business and then accepted for alternate choice. You don’t learn decision on alternate choice unless rejected from first choice.

Thanks drusba, this makes me feel slightly better.

Even so, I’m thinking I’ll probably get denied in the end. How many students who get deferred actually get in with their original choice (not alternate choice)?

same situation here. deferred for business.2010 SAT, ib diploma, 109 toefl, VERY good essays…well, another two months of waiting.

Winston: I wish you good luck, since I also got deferred for business. I don’t even know if I can wait 2 months without going insane.

lol…i hope we both get in, but neither do i know how im going to survive these two months. i guess we’ll have to support each other til the decisions come in feb 23. wat are ur rough stats btw?

hah, yeah, that would be wonderful. i’m just trying not to think about it too much, but it’s really sad since pretty much everyone at my school who applied got admitted =/.

ACT: 32
GPA: 4.23

Man, I guess a whole lot of business applicants have been deferred this time. It relieves me a bit. Dunno how i will wait another two months!!!~~~
