I applied ED II to Pomona and was deferred and so the Admissions Officer advised me to write a letter saying why I want to attend, etc.

Should I take a risk with this letter and show personality or should it be very serious and explain why I want to attend? Which style is better for a letter after being deferred? I want to stand out and so I think if I take a risk it could pay off while a serious letter would just blend in.

I think you have analyzed things well. Taking a risk is a good strategy. You want to stand out as someone who really wants to be at Pomona. Don't try to prove how clever you are, try to prove how much you want to go to Pomona. Taking a risk in that direction makes sense.

Pomona has a problem in that a lot of students really want to go to Brown or wherever, don't get in, and settle on Pomona. But Pomona really want students who desperately want to be at Pomona. And they are asking you to prove your love.

What the admission officer is asking is, how much do you love me?

The opening of the letter describes my love for Pomona and Valentine's day then I actually go into serious reasons and end up going full circle with the love metaphor in the end. Thanks
