Deferral: What Do I Do Now?

As any applicant who was deferred, I was pretty disappointed with my decision. But, there is still a tiny glimmer of hope. What can I do to increase my odds of admission? Send a letter? What should it include? Thanks for the help!

You should focus on your finals, and being able to send an updated transcript that shows strong first semester grades.

Is that it? I mean, I am getting all A’s, but I have a 4.0 so it really won’t make that much of a difference, will it?

Really there’s nothing we can do to better our apps, unless you’re in that special circumstance where something major changes in the next month or two.

There’s a small, slight chance that we could still get in, but since it’s out of our hands, I suggest you just stop worrying about it.

Treat it like a rejection. Then you can focus on your other apps, and if you do get in come March, it’ll be a pleasant surprise.

I agree with Nihilus,

The fact is only 49 applicants were rejected, and 79% were differed. The RD round will be insane, we gave it our best shot. We can only wait, it’s best we treat it like a rejection.

Carnivore, where are you getting that information from? Can you cite a source? Thanks.

@Rkhan1 [714 students, or 18.5 percent, offered early admission in third year of U.?s early action program - The Daily Princetonian](http://dailyprincetonian.com/news/2013/12/714-students-or-18-5-percent-offered-early-admission-in-third-year-of-u-s-early-action-program/)

As a deferred applicant myself, I too am searching for ways to increase my odds of ending with an acceptance (regardless of small they are). I’d appreciate any advice for me in this situation:

I made a lot of bad decisions in my common app… didn’t report AP scores (didn’t know you could, silly me), put athletic honors under the academic honors section, didn’t make any clear reference to community services, very vague with awards, pretty bad descriptions for activities (for science olympiad, I put “A-Team Member”. yeah, silly me). And most importantly, my common app essay was total trash.

So basically, my common app is getting a complete makeover. Anything I can do to reflect these changes to Princeton? For sure I’m going to email Princeton in January to remind them I exist, along with telling them about the AP scores (pretty bad scores, but I want them to know I at least took them and passed)… but would it be a turnoff if I added a list of awards and extra activities including community services? They aren’t new… just kinda not mentioned.

Thank you
