So I was deferred at Brown ED. I don’t exactly have high test/academic record, but I did have pretty unique extracurriculars. How many applicants does Brown usually reject/defer in the early applicant pool? More importantly, if they defer you, does that mean that you did have something that impressed them? Also, what can be done to improve chances of getting in after deferral?

This is exactly the same situation I’m in. I was convinced that they would accept me or reject me flat out, this deferral hurts more than the rejection in a sense. They normally only reject a few applicants (25%? I don’t know why that number crosses my mind) and I think that ed students only make about 20-30% of each year. I assume they want to see how our grades are first semester/ first trimester, which is sucky for me because my GPA is only about .03 points higher than it was last year. My GPA is so-so, but I thought I made an absolutely convincing argument through my essays, recommendations, interview, etc. It makes me feel like I forgot to tell them something like community service or something. try emailing their admissions department asking about this, supposedly if you show continued interest in Brown being your top choice even after the deferral they like to see that, plus any other new info about you. I hope people like us can get in, I don’t know if it means we have a better shot, but it shows that they liked us enough not to reject us, but to just limit the numbers of students they accept ED. At least this is what I hope.

Well, according to fireandrain, only 6% of applicants get rejected. I think 21% get accepted, and the remainder (73%) are deferred. So, basically, deferral doesn’t really mean much. And I don’t know if you noticed but in the letter from Brown posted online with our decision, it said that the acceptance rate for deferred applicants is pretty much the same as that of RDers.

As far as improving your chances goes, I agree with Panserbjorne. My old guidance counselor told me that they do like to see continued interest and that you should spam them in any way you feel is appropriate about whatever you think might be of interest.
