Deferrals?

I was deferred ID from Rice, but I haven't seen many (if any at all) people here or at my school who also got deferred. Does Rice defer often? Did anyone else here get deferred? How many people does Rice generally accept RD from the deferral pile?

Basically, Rice deferred me and five other people at my school. They accepted one, who I personally believe was, while a strong candidate, not as strong as some of the others. But maybe that's just my bitterness talking.

NYskins - I don't have time to dig for it now, but I know that information is available on the Rice website because I remember reading it several years ago. It's in an area of facts and figures that includes total apps, transfer stats, number of vals, sat percents etc. I think you can find it if you hunt... HTH's

vtao, that is very likely true. However, Rice looks at more than just stats. Go to princetonreview.com and search for rice and admissions stats. They rank the essay and personal quality/talent equal to SAT's and secondary school record.

Yeah, I got deferred too, NYSkins1. It sucks but it could have been worse right? We could have been out right rejected. Have faith and believe!

Decision Plans (Class of 2008)

Eight (8) were deferred and admitted under a later decision plan.
Thirty-six (36) were deferred and admitted under Regular Decision.
*
*Forty (40) were admitted from the wait list.
†Twenty-nine (29) of those admitted from the wait list enrolled.
The total admitted includes three (3) admitted students who will enroll in Fall 2005.

does it say the total number of deferrals anywhere?

my friend and I were both deferred. Honestly, my essays werent to great so I can see why (i was banking on sat scores). Whatever, Rice wasn't my first choice anyways so I don't care too much.

my friend and i were both deferred. i hate rice. =] they pick the most random people -_- i seriously think it was either a) my interview (my interviewer was an idiot.. he didn't even know crime and punishment was a russian novel..) or b) they didn't pick me because i was overqualified.

honestly, i guess i may sound "conceited," but i heard that rice didn't pick really qualified students because they figure they'll be going to ivy leagues anyway.

sigh either way. congrats to those who made it.

I guess I'm screwed. I wonder how many are deferred?

"they didn't pick me because i was overqualified" lol heidi, you're funny. no, you don't sound conceited at all....

just remember that admission to top-tier schools isn't all about perfect stats

Heidi! My interview was terrible. Worst 30 minutes of my life, yet I still got in. Interviews really aren't waited. Lots of qualifed people got rejected. Obviously those who got in has something that Rice wanted. Remember they are building a class.

hey yea im from az.. i got friggin deferred from rice. UGH!!
im really bummed... a 29% admit rate is pretty good and I dont see how so many of us were deferred. What are u guys doing if you were deferred?
Also, can u guys post ur stats and stuff? briefly.. I would like to know who else was deferred who was VERY qualified to get into rice. Hope im not askin too much.. thank you!

my deferred stats

Sunray Chinese School-tutoring kids in english
Public Library-shelving books

leadership
youth group president at my church but that's about it

I had a strong interview and a really good essay <---not being conceited, but my proofreaders were all "I wouldnt change a thing, excellent, etc."

whatever. counting on columbia...

sat: 2200
sat 2: took 5, average of 750
APs: 5, 5. Currently taking 5 more APs
Rank about 10/350 in a competitve public in a competitve state
ECs: lots of band/marching/orchestra and church/summer volunteering, a few leadership in school (VP, section leader, treasurer), nhs, tutoring
Very good interview (imo, even though it was my first)
Essay: Alright.
Recs: GC's rec is great (got a top-of-my-career); teacher's I assume 2 pretty good, 1 good.

Feeling: bummed. If I can't get in with a 29% admit rate, how will I do in the more competitive Ivies?

don't worry about it. I think the adcoms at Rice are on crack or something. Some of these deferrals and rejections don't make much sense.

azchica-

just out of curiosity where in az are you from/ do you go to a very competitive high school? That may have played a factor, because i'm in Northern az (Flagstaff), no one at my school (maybe no one in my town?) applied, and I may have looked good compared to others here.

"overqualified" .....people there are very qualified....they are just not looking for qualified based on academics but in other factors.

you have to totally play up anything thats unique about you, theyre really looking for diversity in ALL aspects. you guys were all clearly qualified for the academics for the school, but maybe the same as someone else who applied and who also had some extra part of their life that was different from most people, or maybe ethnicity..affirmative action right?

If you are deferred it does NOT mean that you are not as qualified as Joe Smith who got in... it just means that there is not room enough for everyone. It's the same at all highly selective schools. The adcom members have to balance gender, interests, geographical location, culture group, possible majors, sports needs, academics, public vs. private school, personality types..... when you get all those factors in there, there are severe limits on each subgroup. Lets say that Rice wants to enroll 350 freshmen woman - of those 350, they might want 70 percent public school, 30% private/homeschool, as you keep breaking it down by category you realize that there are very few spots in each "slot". Too many great applicants, not enough space. You've all heard stories of people getting rejected by Princeton, but accepted by Harvard - maybe that'll be you.
(Rice is planning to expand their student body in the next ten years. Too late for you guys, but maybe not your baby brother or sister!)
