<p>Very good anxiousmom. The use of the word 'qualified' by some posters here is perhaps in lieu of a better word. </p>
<p>One cannot assume a deferred candidate isn't qualifed in ALL aspects of their application, academics and otherwise. There isn't some 'magic bean' that gets you in, or something 'missing' if you are deferred. It's just about slots. I would think for some of the categories anxiousmom mentioned there may only be 5 to 10 slots to accommodate applicants from all over the world! Rice is just that small of a school for now.</p>
<p>AND, to the students who are deferred, you are not rejected! Keep an optimistic outlook....you have what Rice wants or you would have been denied. Rice takes quite a few kids deferred to RD from ID. Be optimistic and don't buy into anything you read here that suggests you are not Rice material.</p>
