I don't know how I feel about getting deferred! I know one kid who got accepted (plus basically everyone on this board) and 2 who got denied. I guess I'm kind of in the middle.

Do most deferrals get denied in regular action? or are they usually at the top of the heap?

It sucks that I have to wait until march...but I emailed my counselor and asked her what I can do to improve my application. Hopefully she will give me some good tips.

31 ACT, 4.4W, 4.0 UW. 2100 SAT - 750M, 620CR and 730W. Work 35 hrs/week, participated in study abroad program this summer, design websites. Decent ECs. Class rank: 4/580

don’t be worried, you’ll probably get deferred too. I’m kind of glad I got deferred, I can update my application until march basically, and (i think) i’m able to retake the ACT in february. Hopefully I’ll be more competitive in RA than I was in EA

Being deferred doesn’t put you at any disadvantage in the process. You are still competing against the entire applicant pool. Those who got accepted are just the top of the top which notre dame though would be competitive with the rest of the applicant pool - they are conservative when they make the decision.

Accepted Purdue, U of I-Champaign
He is very hopeful to be admitted regular decision, however it’s going to be a long wait.

Proud parents of how he’s handling this disappointment.

I got deferred today. I have similar stats to those above, and I don’t know what else to do besides send it my semester grades. I’ll ask my counselor after Christmas break. Also, does anyone know how many people are deferred of the EA pool and then how many are accepted? None of those stats are available on ND’s website, but maybe the information is somewhere.

c/o - You should try emailing your counselor now. I emailed mine yesterday and got a response today, which is surprising given how busy they probably are. They can take a look at your application and tell you the weakest part. For me, it was my test scores so I’m going to have to re-take the ACT on Feb 6.

I don’t know exactly how many were deferred/denied, but it looks like there are very few deferrals. Most of the people I know who applied got either accepted or denied. I think (I hope) that getting deferred generally means you have a good chance to get accepted during Regular Action.

It all depends on how you match up with the current application pool - also from prior knowledge, you won’t see many people post stats about being deferred or denied - you will see the vast majority of accepted students say they were accepted on sites like this while you see less of deferred students and fewer denied - they do defer more students than they accept or deny.

I feelkinda bad seeing that all those who were deffered above have way better stas than me

I live in New York City, Bronx, which explain the myriad of oppurtunities…

Oh…did i leave out that i am black sooo i dnt know if that helped or anything?
does it???

I really think the ethnicity thing has a lot to do with it, or you must have written an amazing essay. No offense but your stats just aren’t as good as a lot of other people who have gotten denied/deferred. I personally don’t think it’s very fair, but eh, there’s nothing you can do about it. Congratulations on your acceptance though, Notre Dame is an amazing school!

Shyman - congrats on your acceptance. I hate to say this to people like csmith27, but stats are not everything. The fact that shyman has had articles in newspapers and the fact that he is an outstanding writing has a lot to do with it. ECs and Essays can really cover bad stats. Like was said on other posts, statistics will not get you into ND and won’t prevent you from getting into ND (but don’t think a 2.5 GPA is going to help lol)

Thank is was highly nervous about my stats but my EC’s and accomplishments seems to of eclisped it…but i feel really bad for those who do have beter stats and did not get in =(

Shyman - at the end of the day, guess what - you got in and others did not - I hate to sound mean, but ND found something in you that they really wanted - in some they find stats, in others, they find ECs and essays - take it and run with it. Congrats once again

Thanks…good luck in the Spring hope u get in…cuz everyone told me the same thing…it does not matter HOW you got accepted but THAT YOU WERE accepted

Judging by his writing on this board, I’m having trouble believing that he was published in the Wall street journal and new york times. Notre Dame is academically challenging, so why would they accept someone that can’t even manage to get a 25 on the ACT? I’m not trying to be an ******* here but I really doubt that this guy is who he says he is. You’re right, stats aren’t everything - but theres a limit to that.
