I need help! Okay so I have deferred action and I am filling out my FAFSA. My parents are undocumented but my dad pays taxes and he uses the 1040 form. He has an ITIN number for not a SS#. Whenever i put all this information it tells me that the putting the 1040 form is an error so I put foreign tax instead and it says all i need is their signature. also I put zeros on their SS#. help??

I found the following information: [FinAid | Financial Aid Applications | Common Errors](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid)

“Although you are required to have a Social Security Number, your parents are not. If your parents do not have a Social Security Number, don’t make up a random number or use a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), as it will fail the database match. Instead, use 000-00-0000. (If the parents indicate that they have filed or will file a US tax return, the application will be rejected with reject codes J or K. If this occurs, resubmit and it will be accepted.)”

Good luck! :)

No, if your parents worked in US, they don’t file foreign taxes.

Deferred action does not make you a US citizen, permanent resident or eligible non-citizen.

Your having deferred action allow you to work and to remain int he US for the next 2 years. It does not make you eligible for federal student aid. You will not be able to file the FASFA because you are still ineligible to receive federal aid.

You cannot file the fafsa using your/your parents ITIN number. As a person with deferred action you cannot and should not be filing the FAFSA.

Some institutions use the FAFSA for their own financial aid purposes. Even if a student is ineligible for federal aid, he/she may need to file it to be considered for aid from the college/university itself, for a private scholarship, or for state aid that a particular state offers to all graduates of its high schools.

Yes, this is true. Student will have to contact the individual financial aid offices as to how to proceed. Even then, the student would be best served filing a paper copy of the FAFSA and sending it to those schools, vs trying to file on-line where it most likely will not be processed.

How can your parents file taxes if they don’t have SS numbers? I don’t understand that. Additionally are you considered a US citizen? If you’re not a citizen, you can’t file FAFSA online. You need to contact the individual colleges.

Many people who don’t have SSNs file taxes using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. Read about it here: http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Individual-Taxpayer-Identification-Number-(ITIN) The ITIN cannot be used for the FAFSA, which means that people who pay tax here but don’t qualify for an SSN use 000-00-0000 on the FAFSA.
